PHUKET: Thailand's top Tourist Police Chief visited Phuket's Patong beach yesterday in response to complaints that Chinese tourists had been charged excessive amounts for damaging jet-skis.
General Roi Engkapairoj talked to Nucha Petwimon, deputy president of the Phuket Jet-Ski Association, and was shown paperwork used to explain the hiring of jet-skis to tourists.
Problems arise when jet-ski damage exceeds the amount covered by insurance and a fair payment has to be negotiated between the tourist rider and the operator.
Chinese consul Qin Jian this week wrote to Phuket tourism authorities and consumer bodies outlining two cases in which Chinese tourists had been asked to pay large amounts.

Jet-ski operators have been accused of intimidation and verbal abuse of tourists in disputes.
