A tip-off led Chalong officers to the southern Phuket Tesco store in Viset Road Rawai about 10.30am yesterday where a ''sting'' arrest was planned. But suspect Sompong Kamutok, 23, bolted for the exit when police approached him.
Khun Sompong took off on his Yamaha Fino motorcycle. Unperturbed, police radioed colleagues and the dope fugitive was quickly apprehended at a road checkpoint at Chalong Circle.
In his shorts pocket, officers found a small quantity of marijuana. After going to his home in Moo 4 Rawai, officers hit the jackpot.
In a secret underground room, they discovered 400 kilos of marijuana, each kilo packed neatly in a bag ready for distribution.
Khun Sompong confessed that the marijuana belonged to him. Details of where it was grown and how it was to be distributed are likely to be revealed at a Phuket police media press conference later today.
Marijuana is believed to be a popular drug, smoked on Phuket and throughout the southern region.
In many Western countries, possession of small amounts of marijuana is no longer a criminal offence.
