Phuket sees the light after economic darkness

Phuket Investment Drops But Bounce Predicted

Wednesday, September 2, 2009
INVESTMENT in Phuket sagged by 30 percent in the first half of 2009, the Director of the Phuket Commerce Office, Awoot Wongswat, said today.

Latest figures show five SME segments attracted 889 million baht with Thai shareholders owning 89.97 percent and foreigners 9.56 percent, with 0.47 percent Thai/farang.

Projects that got the green light included resorts, a prosthetics maker, and a medical products manufacturing plant.

In the first six months of 2009, 607 new businesses registered, a drop of 23.36 percent on the previous year. The investment total of 1123.24 million baht fell by 29.57 percent compared with 2008.

Khun Awoot said that while the figures for the year to July were in line with the global economic downturn, the next six months look more promising.

August was showing signs of being better than last year, he said.

''Phuket should have the investment it deserves as the next six months improve,'' he said.
