Phuket Prison's female inmates sit down for a birthday meal today

Phuket Inmates Mark Queen's Birthday With Special Meal

Tuesday, August 9, 2011
PHUKET: The 193 women inside overcrowded Phuket Prison were treated to a special meal and a cultural performance today to mark HM The Queen's birthday.

Governor's wife and President of Phuket Red Cross Nilinee Augkaradacha was accompanied by representatives from the National Council on Social Welfare of Thailand, which funded the activities at Phuket Prison and every prison in Thailand.

The Queen will celebrate her 79th birthday on Friday, an occasion celebrated by the nation with a public holiday. It's mother's day in Thailand, and among the prisoners today were some nursing mothers and mothers of infants.

The children sleep at a care centre alongside the prison in Phuket City.

Last year, an amnesty for the Queen's Birthday allowed Phuket Prison to relieve some of the pressure on space. More than 1400 inmates are crowded into an antiquated prison built to hold about 750.

Conditions at the prison mean that skin diseases are easily transmitted with one former inmate comparing sleeping conditions on mats on the floor to conditions on slave ships.

It's expected some temporary relief will be provided with an amnesty for some well-behaved prisoners likely to mark HM The King's birthday on December 5.

Letter to the PM We don't care where the PM gets her hair done, as long as she lets it down soon and begins dramatically improving Thailand. She could begin with the appalling education system.

I know these women are probably in for crimes, some serious. But it's still heartbreaking to see, esp. knowing it's worse on the inside than any of us can imagine.

JingJing, yes, they usually send people to prison because of crimes. Maybe it won't be so heartbreaking if you consider that some of them are inside now for failing to prevent their falang boyfriend from accidentally falling off the 8th floor balcony or accidentally eating poisoned food...
