Tuk-tuk drivers join today's Phuket City protest for licences

Phuket Illegal Tuk-Tuk Drivers Protest: They Want to Join Legal Ranks

Tuesday, February 24, 2015
PHUKET: About 20 tuk-tuk drivers representing more than 120 illegal operators who want to be given licences staged a protest at Phuket Provincial Hall today. The drivers then went into talks with officials who believe Phuket already has too many tuk-tuks and taxis. High fares demanded by drivers on Phuket are rated a problem by most tourists. Local residents cannot afford taxis.

Wasn't Patong looking at creating an artificial reef. Just saying.

Protest all you want but don't expect any sympathy from your to-be victims.

If anything, the number of tuk-tuks should be cut in half.

Thought they had their chance before. Now the cry babies are coming crawling back and crying we want to be legal too. Buhuu
Why don't you move somewhere else.

It is still 400 baht for a seven minute ride from Karon to Patong, no wonder they all want to get involved in the greatest scam of this island, more drivers SHOULD mean lower fares, HA-HA

convert them all (and i mean all) to hop-on-hop-off circulating bus following various circuitous routes around patong.. ride any distance around the route for minimal charge.. many people would use them drivers would easily make more than the one fare a day meaning no need to charge ludicrous fares for one single journey!!

That's a good idea.

I'm on a short trip to Phuket to catch up with friends. I went from Phuket Town to Karon via Patong mid afternoon & coming through Patong at the top end of Bangla, there were wall to wall tuk tuks, congesting the road so I see little change there. Too many for starters & still not operating under any sort of obvious control as was promised. I think the authorities are banging their heads against the proverbial brick wall.

a artificial reef in the horse shoe Patong Bay? Now Patong beach water area is already overflowing 'E-Coli' by all the raw sewage from Patong. A artificial reef will even more block a needed water circulation with open sea. And how about the cruise vessels, anchoring in Patong bay?

@Kurt, the reef idea was a joke, but would be a good use for all the un-needed TukTuks....

@Another Steve, it is an excellent idea and one that has been suggested many times previously. The problem (as I am lead to believe) is that this would involve the drivers actually having to do something all day instead of sitting around shouting "tuk tuk, tuk tuk" at every passing person..... This is clearly not welcomed by the drivers for some reason.

still seems like a case of to many tuktuks and not enough customers.

If the fares were lower and more reasonable, the situation might become more normal. As long as the drivers are able to threaten to blockade the streets, Phuket transport will be a turn-off for tourists. Residents, of course, are deprived of taxis because of the high cost. As the drivers only need one or two fares a day, the principle is plain. It's called ''jobs for the boys.''
