PHUKET: Ten fire trucks poured water onto a five-million baht blaze at a house in southern Phuket today that attracted the attention of onlookers from kilometres away.
Billowing smoke rose above the Chalong area from the home near the HomePro shopping centre as firemen from local government facilites answered alarm calls about 11.45am.
First estimates put damage in the blaze at five million baht. The house's owners, Winat Pongbupasirikul, 61,
and his wife Maliwan, a teacher, told firemen that cash and jewellery were inside the building when the blaze broke out.
Khun Winat runs a furniture factory. A neighbor called Khun Maliwan at school to let her know their house, largely timber in Thai-style, was ablaze.
Firemen think it could have started because of an electrical fault but an investigation is likely to begin once the blaze has been fully extinguished.
