Patong police interview rape suspect Supachai Jongkonpeort

Phuket Hotel Repair Man Raped Me, Says British Woman

Sunday, June 12, 2011
PHUKET: A Phuket hotel repair man raped a British woman in her room when he found her asleep on her bed, Patong police have been told.

The man accused of raping the 31-year-old woman is under arrest and will appear in court on Monday, Lieutenant Thanakrit Keawyai of Kathu Police Station, which oversees Patong, told Phuketwan today.

He is Supachai Jongkonpeort, 27, who allegedly was sent to do repairs in the woman's room yesterday morning.

The woman, an expat resident staying on Phuket for six months, went to Kathu police about noon and told them she had been raped as she lay on her bed asleep, awaking when the man attacked her.

Lieutenant Thanakrit said that the woman told him she had punched the man twice before he fled.

Tests at Patong Hospital appeared to confirm the woman's allegation.

A very serious charge and, noting that Patong hospital has confirmed the woman's story, you should name the hotel. Unusually for you Ed you do not say ''allegedly raped''. Obviously you know something we don't.

We've attributed the rape claim to the woman, Pete, in virtually every sentence. Only you would read it any other way. As the article makes plain, the man is innocent until proven guilty. What we know that you don't is that to identify the hotel would narrow the prospects of readers identifying the woman, something we are obliged by law not to do.

It is a sad commentary when women feel ashamed they were assaulted. Societal attitudes of cloaking her ID may actually enable more attacks in the US private university system, according to recent report.

All travelers should carry a plastic wedge and a bell to hang on the door to safeguard against those with keys.

So, identifying the woman would be wrong but posting the name and photo of the "innocent until proven guilty man" is OK ?

Trial by media ?

Anonymous comments like this one show a blank in your knowledge of the law, not just in Thailand but most places, as well as a blank in the space where a name might be. Yes, the alleged victim in a rape case is spared trial by the ignorant.

In my country firm's owners give a special thip at the end of the montly points list salary. The last one says, "a thip for not being made by wood"! Thai owners, have two possibilities to help their workers: 1)give a thip, as well, to spend in karaoke or massage parlour; 2)suggest them to go to soi 11!?!

Martin, come up with something that expands readers' knowledge about any topic and you will be published here. There are plenty of other places to post flaccid and pointless comments. Go for it.

You commented that "the man is innocent until proven guilty" , yet were happy to post his name and photograph, so the "alleged victim" is spared 'trial by the ignorant' but the "alleged suspect" is not ?

As for my comment being 'Anonymous', next to the Name area it states - not required !

Why would alleged perpetrators deserve protection? Having a transparent system of justice is vital. Minors and victims in sex cases are protected from being named. Your argument is surely with the lawmakers, not the media.

If everybody chose to remain a blank, what a blank world that would be.

Some of these comment are just ridiculous by anonymous names. If people are arrested there names and photos are often posted in the press pending a court date in Thailand or many other countries, the UK being one of them! The editor is on the right track and following what he can report and can't in Thailand, learn a little and come back when you have anonymous!!
