The curve where the truck hit the motorcycle near the Phuket checkpoint

UPDATE Phuket Horror Smash: Girl Dragged to Death Under Truck Trailer at Checkpoint Curve

Saturday, August 1, 2015
UPDATING All Day, Every Day

THE DRIVER of the truck surrendered to Tachatchai police on Friday night. It's not known whether he saw the motorcycle and knew he had hit it.

Original Report

PHUKET: Police are hunting the driver of a truck-trailer that dragged a 12-year-old girl to her death in a horrific fatal crash near the main entry checkpoint on Phuket yesterday.

The child's mother ran after the truck crying out for the driver to stop before collapsing from her own injuries, said investigators at Tachatchai Police Station.

The 18-wheel truck-trailer crashed into the mother and daughter and knocked them from their motorcycle as the large articulated vehicle rounded a sharp curve to head south onto the island after passing through the checkpoint about 6.15am yesterday.

As the truck manoeuvred through the sharp bend, Wassana Kamkaew, 40, and her 12-year-old daughter were knocked from their Honda Wave, police said.

''The girl was pinned under the trailer and carried several hundred metres down the road,'' an officer told Phuketwan. ''Khun Wassana ran after the truck yelling 'Stop! Stop!' then collapsed from her own injuries.''

The truck kept on going. At this stage, police do not know whether the driver was aware that his vehicle had struck the motorcycle and its occupants.

The girl's body, with her clothing shredded, was taken to Thalang Hospital.

Her mother was admitted and being treated today at the same hospital.

as far as I remember, there was at least one more similar horror here in the last 12 months..

6:15am it is already not dark.

Even if they were on a roadway, it seems that there was something wrong with a driver perceptions: too tired and sleepy, and then over-stimulated,good if just with Tiger Eye..

It is constantly the same figure - FIFTEEN(!) PER CENT of all drivers who test drug-positive during police mass raids, I calculate a ratio every time when the data is reported by media, and the ratio stays actually constant.

This real life current case is way worse than any horror movie.

Since there is no means to protect yourself from (high) external risks while participating in traffic on Phuket, my advise to all visitors I give: plan your logistics to move less - fewer kms on Phuket, don't do hopping etc, probability of a crash is a function of how many kms you go around Phuket,so just stay stationary and within walking distance as much as you can - there is nothing can be done against impact of other traffic participants, except not to participate in a traffic on Phuket yourself.

12 years old in the night time without driving licence !
And her parents let her going on this dangerous road !
Of course it is sad but here is my question : who is responsible of her death ? Tell me, who ???

When I read articles like this, it really does bring to light the urgent need of reform to save lives. Driving standards are extremely poor in Thailand, and the Government must combat this issue head on. How many lives must be needlessly lost, before serious action is taken?

It's a tragic day for all. RIP

When vehicles cut corners, it's because it's going too fast to go around the corner and stay in their own lane.

Very sad - I hope they make an example of bad drivers for once.

I have never seen anyone be pulled over for bad driving, even when the Police witness it.

Sorry for the ladies loss over the incompetence of drivers.

@Ric, I know the media, here, often do not do a through report, eg never investigating or following up, but in this case it is you who failed, in the article it clearly states "The child's mother ran after the truck crying out for the driver to stop before collapsing from her own injuries, said investigators at Tachatchai Police Station.

The 18-wheel truck-trailer crashed into the mother and daughter and knocked them from their motorcycle,"
you need to read more than the headline and first paragraph. Ed, I'm surprised you didn't say something.

The crash (I won't say "accident") occurred on Friday morning and the "driver" surrendered on Friday night.

Is that long enough for the drugs to be out of his system?

I presume they will test him for drugs, won't they?

Morbide. I always ask: Was the driver tested on drugs/alcohol?
Thai drivers who run away from the scene do that with purpose. Just report to police 2 days later when the alcohol is out of their blood.

@ Smithy. Probably not. They will just chalk it up because they have to.

-RiC- What you writing about? I read = "The 18-wheel truck-trailer crashed into the mother and daughter and knocked them from their motorcycle" So the mother drove with her daughter and 6:15 AM is not night time anyway. My sons, get picked up for school at that time from Schoolbus. Many people go working at that time, no darkness anymore! -lAURIE- Thank you for clarifying the matter.

Sorry but sometimes???.
I never driven an articulated vehicle but I assume if such a vehicle is making a turn or negotiating a bend the rear mirrors would not cover the trailer.
Therefore calling the sad accident a hit and run is a misnomer without the full facts. How many times have all the ???expert??? Farang drivers had a motorcycle creep up on the inside of their vehicle while waiting to turn.A collision inevitable if the bike was not observed?
Unfortunately wandering all over the road ???oblivious??? is quite common for many vehicles especially motorbikes it seems.
Is it not likely that the driver had no idea of the accident???a large truck would perhaps not ???notice??? any collision (noisy diesel ,enclosed cab) no more than a freighter would notice running down a pleasure yacht.

Editor Comment:

The tightness of the turn puts anyone on the curve at the time of the articulated truck turning at risk.
