Phuket HIV/Aids Cases Now in Sharp Decline

Monday, November 8, 2010
NEW CASES of HIV/Aids on Phuket are in sharp decline this year after claiming the lives of 1877 people over the past 20 years.

Figures released by the Phuket Public Health Department to Phuketwan today show 66 new cases have been found in 2010 up to the end of October. This figure compares with 384 cases in 2006 - more than a new case every day - the highest tally since records were first kept 20 years ago.

Since 2006, the annual tally of new cases has reduced from 384 to 293 to 238 to 212 to 66 in the first 10 months of this year.

Based on the figures for 2009, Phuket rated No. 1 for new HIV/Aids cases in Thailand.

Of the 3939 cases of HIV/Aids over two decades, 2631 have been among males and 1308 among females.

Campaigns are conducted from time to time among segments of the population that are thought to be most at risk. Prevalence of HIV/Aids is highest among the 25-39 years age group, which makes up 26.4 percent of the confirmed cases.

Out of every 100,000 in the population, 65.99 people will have HIV/Aids.

It is not clear whether the statistical analysis is based on Phuket's official population of 320,000 citizens or on the broader actual population of more than 600,000 Thais, 200,000 Burmese, plus tourists.

You are saying that less than 1 in 1,000 people in Thailand have HIV?

I think the figure is more like 1 in 100, with more than 1/2 million people infected in Thailand and as many already dead from the virus.

We are not saying anything. We are reporting statistics from Phuket Public Health. According to their figures, your estimates are wildly exaggerated.

They aren't my estimates they are the numbers direct from the United Nations.

Surely you guys just don't hash out news without a little research.

There is nothing on the page you mention that casts doubt on the the figures supplied by Phuket Public Health. There's a better than even chance that the UN stats are derived from Public Health figures.

You can't see the difference between "Out of every 100,000 in the population, 65.99 people will have HIV/Aids. " from the article and "Adults aged 15 to 49 prevalence rate: 1.4%" from The United Nations ?

One is less than a thousand, One is greater than 1 in 100, even if you rounded those numbers out to carry the under 15 and over 49's it's still a discrepancy of 1000%. This is made even worse since Phuket was only recently portrayed as the 2nd amongst all 76 Thailand Provinces for HIV infection.

Seems like dangerous reporting to play down the numbers so much in a place where prostitution is so common.

The Phuket Public Health numbers reflect a greatly reduced incidence of new HIV/Aids cases. ''Since 2006, the annual tally of new cases has reduced from 384 to 293 to 238 to 212 to 66 in the first 10 months of this year.'' If this is an accurate representation of the situation across all 77 provinces, then that's real progress. And as the addition of another province shows, times and circumstances do change. Eventually, if the trend is nationwide, the UN figures should take this improvement into account. We hope cases of HIV/Aids are no longer at the levels you think they're still at, although clearly, even fewer cases remain too many.

Prostitution is common everywhere, Benjy.
