Phuket Hit-Run Rider Escapes in Collision With Police Officer

Tuesday, December 4, 2012
PHUKET: An expat on Phuket has escaped free despite his involvement in a hit-run crash with a policeman in the Kamala area last night.

The man rode off after colliding with another motorcycle. He may still think that the police are hunting for him.

The rider of the other motorcycle was a policeman, which would normally mean problems for the hit-run rider.

However, about 20 minutes earlier, around 11pm, volunteers had noted by walkie talkie that the policeman on the motorcycle was riding erratically and appeared to be drunk.

So when the inevitable happened and the policeman was knocked from his motorcycle, breaking ribs, senior officers decided he had been punished enough.

To pursue the case would be likely to cost the policeman his job for riding while drunk.

It's the second time within days that an expat has been involved in a serious crash on Phuket.

American Scott Franklin Dean, 31, has been bailed for 100,000 baht after the pickup he was driving hit and killed a motorcyclist soon after midnight on Sunday.

Amnaj Reungtacheewit, 20, of the Phuket City district of Rassada, died at the scene, near the Saiyuan Road intersection with Viset Road, in southern Phuket.

Mr Dean was heading from Rawai to Chalong Circle, while the helmetless motorcycle rider was travelling south.

According to police, Mr Dean tested over the limit for alcohol and the crash took place on the left side of the road, the wrong side for the American.

Phuket's Public Health department ceased providing monthly updates on Phuket's road toll and drowning toll in May so it's no longer possible to know whether more people are dying on Phuket roads or beaches, or fewer.

Yes the Traffic are quiet Heavy this day , like tonight I reading a bike my self at 40 kms helmet on always ! i'm here since 3 years with no accident made since i drive a bike here , But This Evening look most Time i have avoided accident again by watch carefully, it was a foreigner in kata who was walking in a road almost in middle with is suitcase instead to be on a left side of road where people can walk safely , i don't know whats think foreigner when they come here but it's a same approach like western country no! walk safety on left or right side of the road same for driving, Thailand it's seem to be more free for westerner who like to have crazy driving with no care !! pity to see this from such of peoples think holiday only and think all it's free zero risk !! Westerner enjoy but don't put The life of the other on !!! Cheers

So many expats who drink and drive!
For those of you who do, you are just as bad as the mini bus drivers that so many of you complain about. When will all this madness end?
So sorry for the victims family and friends. Another needless loss of such a young life.Tragic.

I would add to statistic. I was driving drunk (facepalm) from Chalong to Phuket at 29 of November same time as Mr Dean (I met him in hospital). Next I found myself in hospital. Don't remember what happened. I could be anything... Police don't care.
Also now after visiting 3 hospitals with my problems I changed my mind about Phuket and Thailand.

@ratatoee if you think foreigners are the problem on Thai roads, you are truly blinded by your patriotism.

@Jhon, a mate of mine just recently crashed and was hospitalized while driving drunk on his motorbike. He was charged with drunk driving. So the police do care, at least sometimes.

It should be mentioned that the traffic light at the accident site doesn't work for a week now. Maybe they are waiting for some more people to die.

And just in case that the victim was an owner of a blue helmet - one of the dead body videotaping tourists took a helmet from the road next to his bike, next to the victims shoe and debris.

As it turns out Mr. Dean's accident happened on the left side of the road. He was traveling northbound in his lane when the motorcycle with no insurance, no helmet and no license, traveling southbound and trying to turn on to Saiyuan rd, quickly turned in front of him.

Thanks you Ed. Left and right are subjective terms. Northbound and southbound would be more helpful. As for the police. I'm not sure I would trust their account.
