Functioning democracies do not install leaders in coups, nor shoot down protesters and journalists. Thailand fools no one but herself.

Really? Let's see:
Kent State, Haymarket, Coxey's Army version 2, numerous civil rights protests in 60's, etc. Coups - see the southern US during reconstruction (various coups in developing republics that have occurred on the path to establishing democracy. Democracies are most commonly founded thru a coup so your point is rebutted by itself. So the US would not be a "functioning" democracy and the question changes to what is a functioning democracy and what does that mean. Also if you read any of the founders of American Democracy - Paine, Jefferson, Madison all that is happening in Thailand woud be considered part of the process of establishing a "true democracy".

So who exactly is fooling whom?
