PHUKET: Governors of Phuket and all 13 other southern provinces have been called to an Army base in the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat for a briefing at 2pm today.
The special briefing - one of four being held simultaneously through the country - follows the announcement of martial law throughout Thailand before dawn.
The governors will be joined by the leaders of all professions, state enterprises and senior academics.
The call for people to attend the meetings went out over television at 11am when normal transmission was interrupted.
Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud will need to catch a helicopter as the headquarters of the 4th Army is four hours' drive from Phuket.
Three more meetings of community leaders are being held simultaneously in other parts of Thailand. Normal transmissions were interrupted for the announcement of the meetings, in Thai and English.
