Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob: Phuket has to turn greed into need

Phuket Governor Hits at Phuket's 'Me First' Greed

Wednesday, June 23, 2010
GOVERNOR Wichai Praisa-ngob from Phuket was one of 25 provincial governors who visited Spain for a week to broaden education about trends and possibilities. The governors spent Sunday brainstorming together in Spain before flying back.

Governor Wichai told Phuketwan yesterday that Phuket was more natural than Spain, but Phuket did not understand how to improve the beauty of the island.

''People here just think 'me first, me first, me first,''' he said. ''There is no sense of sharing and growing together. We have to change that mindset,'' he added.

He said that a good public transport system and other attributes could follow if Phuket could absorb some of these community-oriented approaches.

He said he thought Phuket people could actually make more by taking a long-term view. He noted a cable car in Spain of the kind that would work well going up to Phuket's Big Buddha.

In Spain, he said, there was no sense of the tourists being a source of instant income. ''On Phuket, the rip-offs have to stop,'' he said. ''It's not too late. Sort it out and everyone will want to come here.''

Governor Wichai said he planned to try to implement some good ideas in his final three months. ''I will be gone after that, so Phuket people are the ones who have to pursue these ideals,'' he said.

All of the governors on the working trip were from tourism provinces.

Gov,you are dead right! ME FIRST! Sums up the mentality here completely now; on the roads, in corrupt Government departments, and as a price and business practice.

Get as much as you can and get it now and to hell with the long term consequences or reputation of the region.

What a shame that over-development and mass tourism in general has destroyed the 'Sanuk' nature of people here in Phuket and encouraged their quest for the quick buck.

In Phuket short term gain always wins over long term profit.

Is there a Thai word for "sustainability"?

I love our new Governor, he might not always succeed in his plans, but at least he has them and he's trying.

Most importantly is to get rid off the whole blame game ... like in fact 1 of the commenter here; don't blame it on the tourism industry - it's about personal responsibility, as well the CEO's of big companies as from individuals, we all need to take responsibility. It's not a 1 way street.

But of course more important is the challenge for the Governor to make people understand that there actually is a better way, and that taking responsibility does pay off, otherwise it will never stick.

Let's hope he succeeds.

(by the way, I don't think that most of the me-me-me mentality is rooted in bad intentions, but mostly caused by the lack of understanding; most people who short change somebody out of this me-me-me mentality, are simply not aware of the consequences, while once they do know, they feel really bad about it - in other words; the solution will be education, not punishment (except for those that actually do have bad intention of course)

Responsibility translates to, we have the ability to respond to the problem.
Stop crying, ok .

Michiel,

Your naivete is ... refreshing but really, you are living in a fantasy. I was quoted 106,000 baht by a start up law firm today to register a company.

The quote to get my horses flown to USA; five times the amount it cost to fly them here.

Horse Doctor, open a restaurant, not that expensive at 106,000 THB. Let's eat the beasts, and you make money too ?

A good red wine is always welcome with neddy meat, especially rare done.
