Sudiba Wattanaroj and her husband-to-be at her brother's house

Phuket Gay Murder Shocks Family, Resort Staff

Friday, September 2, 2011
PHUKET: A pre-wedding date today for a bride-to-be turned to tragedy overnight with the savage murder of her homosexual brother, a killing that shocked staff at the Patong resort where he worked as front office manager.

Police in Phuket City are questioning three suspects, arrested after friends discovered the brutally beaten and garrotted body of Yusofe Wattanaroj, 35, at his house in Vichit, south of Phuket City.

His sister Sudiba said today that her brother had returned earlier this year from a job in New Zealand and started work as the front office manager at the Patong Paragon Resort and Spa on August 19.

Today Khun Sudiba and her Norwegian husband-to-be were to meet Khun Yusofe for a swim at Patong beach to talk about plans for the wedding at the family home in Nakkorn Si Thammarat on September 11.

Khun Yusofe was a devoted brother, Khun Sudiba said.

''My brother said he would be bringing a friend, Boy, to the wedding,'' she added.

''Yusofe worked in hotels in Bahrain and Dubai before going to New Zealand,'' she said. ''He was highly-skilled and spoke excellent English.''

Phuketwan believes Khun Boy is one of three suspects now being questioned by Phuket City police. Meanwhile, in accordance with Muslim custom, Khun Sudiba has swiftly taken her brother's body home for burial.

Police believe robbery may have been the motive for Khun Yusofe's savage murder. Friends tried to call him from 6pm last night and when there continued to be no answer, they went to his house in Than Thong Villa, Vichit, about 9pm.

There they found bloodstains on a sofa. Lifting a mattress on a bed, they found Khun Yusofe's battered body beneath.

Khun Yusofe's laptop, motorcycle, telephone, watch, wallet, cash and ATM cards were found by officers when they arrested Khun Boy and two others at a house not far away about 12.30am today.

Neighbors had spotted four men at the house earlier in the evening, heard sounds of argument, and saw three of the men leave hurriedly, Khun Subida said.

Is there such a need to play the mans sexuality up.. Surely 'Phuket Murder' is enough ??

What exactly is a 'gay murder' ?? One done with tasteful interior design..

A sister speaks openly about the man's homosexuality, and it appears to be a killing that has connections with friends who shared his lifestyle. The days of coyness about sexuality have long passed, LivinLOS.

Your tendency to find poor humor in human tragedy should concern you.

Story should have read Phuket Murder shocks family, Resort staff. We have long passed the point of cheep sensationalism over ones sexual orientation unless the person's sexual orientation had something directly to do with his death otherwise you're just trying to run up readership on a tragic death by using Gay Murder in the headlines. You response that it ''appears to be a killing that has connections with friends who shared his lifestyle'' may or may not be true but again what does that have to do with his tragic death? Gay Murder is not a stated fact or argument in your article. To the contrary, the police believe robbery is the prime motive not sexual orientation. Your headline would get people to think his sexuality was somehow the cause of his death especially to those who would choose not to read the article. Time to move into the 21st Century the fact his sister said he was Gay to a reporter reporting on what actually happened should have been briefly stated one time in the article along with the fact that the police believe at this point being Gay had nothing to do with his death but Phuketwan thinks otherwise if you want to inject your opinion into the article.

The fact that this poor man appears to have been killed by his former lover would be a total mystery to readers if we chose to overlook the relevance of their sexuality.

If sexuality has no bearing on a case, we ignore it. In this case, it's highly relevant and deserving of its place in the headline and the article.

If the 21st century is ready for gay marriage, it's also ready for gay murders. We only have a problem with those who on the one hand want to celebrate the difference, but on the other hand, want those same differences ignored.

What claptrap.

I am sure I won't be the only person to point out the fact that your headline using the word "gay" seems inappropriate. The fact that the victim is gay seems rather irrelevant to the case. If it is suspected that the motive was robbery, there is no need to blast away about the victim's sexual preference. If he was African, would you call it a black murder? He was also a Muslim, so you could have called it a "Muslim murder", but that wouldn't have been appropriate either.

Color and religion have no bearing in this case. Sexuality does.

Think about this for a second, are you suggesting that because he was gay, and murdered by other homosexuals, that his gayness was responsible for his death? That sounds a lot like homophobia to me!

Editor Comment:

We have a responsibility to all readers to make the point that this appears to have been a falling out between homosexual lovers. That sounds like accuracy to me. What does homophobia ''sound'' like, Jesse? I didn't realise it had a distinctive noise.
His family acknowledge his sexuality, and we acknowledge their pain and sorrow.

In future, then, to avoid being discriminatory, I expect you to refer to all non-gay murders in Phuket as "heterosexual murders". Or how about "heterosexual car crash", etc.

In cases where sexuality has no relevance, we don't mention it. You don't appear to understand relevance and its ethical application. Do some research.

re. Graham's comment about "heterosexual murders" and "heterosexual car crashes"...

I believe that was an attempt at humor. Not a good attempt, but it made I laugh.

This article is about a senseless murder. Attempts at humor are not funny.

There you go again stating items that are not in the article. You now say that "The fact that this poor man appears to have been killed by his former lover would be a total mystery to readers if we chose to overlook the relevance of their sexuality" Well it is a total mystery based on your article. Were in your article does it say that he appears to have been killed by his former lover? You keep adding facts that you failed to put in the original article. His sister said Khun Boy was a friend. Now you say "Former Lover" what a leap if she was as open about her bother as you say why does it not say she said lover not friend. You keep trying to justify missing facts in the article. It is nice however to see that your update report has a more appropriate headline. I do give you credit you're miles ahead when it comes to covering relevant stories even with our disagreements keep it up.

Mike, we have given the circumstances of this case serious consideration and opted to outline it in a manner we deemed ethical and appropriate. Of course we keep adding facts! That's journalism.

What's the big deal everyone here seems to have about the mention that the guy was gay? I don't see such protests in common headlines such as "German killed in car crash" or "Brit robbed by ladyboys" or whatever, where clearly the nationality of the person concerned has no real bearing on the fate that befell them.

The guy was gay and he was murdered - fair enough headline in my opinion.

But why mention that he was 35 - what has the victim's age got to do with it?

@Andy,
If the headline was "Gay Man Murdered" that might be acceptable according to your argument. The term "Gay Murder" seems to have prompted people to question Alan's sanity. Also Alan defending the headline by saying that the gay man's lifestyle was responsible for his demise .. is questionable to say the least.

Posted by Jesse Schule on September 2, 2011 18:23

Editor Comment:

I didn't say anything even vaguely like that, Jesse. Why can't the politically correct ever get it quite correct?

What I said was:

''The fact that this poor man appears to have been killed by his former lover would be a total mystery to readers if we chose to overlook the relevance of their sexuality.

''If sexuality has no bearing on a case, we ignore it. In this case, it's highly relevant and deserving of its place in the headline and the article.''

@Alan,

You said "it appears to be a killing that has connections with friends who shared his lifestyle."

You make it sound like they were on drugs or something? Like the "lifestyle" is responsible.

And as Mike pointed out, your article says that robbery was the likely motive, not a homosexual love triangle?

Posted by Jesse Schule on September 2, 2011 22:44

Editor Comment:

You interpretation of what's written in the article is entirely your own, Jesse. We don't share your interpretation. The police said robbery was a possible motive. We don't ''make it sound like'' anything.
