PHUKET would make a good site for World Expo 2020, Thailand's Deputy Interior Minister, Taworn Senniem, said yesterday. ''Why not? Phuket has top resorts here, and there is plenty of space,'' he said.
''If Phuket is chosen, the island can expect the full support of the government. It would take quite a few years to build the infrastructure.''
Phuket, with Phang Nga and Krabi in a joint bid, is competing against several other provinces for the right to become Thailand's candidate.
If the ''Greater Phuket'' bid succeeds, it will then be up against other international bids. ''Expo 2020 is a big event and it could be great for Thailand and Phuket. Phuket has everything required to win.''
Asked about corruption on Phuket, Khun Taworn said that if the general population showed no signs of caring, then nothing was likely to change. ''People have to ask the government, and ask the politicians, what is being done,'' he said.
''That way, if all three ingredients are involved, a balance can be achieved.''
