NOK AIR is doubling its daily Phuket-Bangkok-Phuket flights from two to four to demonstrate its desire to be an independent budget air leader.
The move from February 1 also includes increases on other routes and flies in the face - literally - of the relatively new partnership between parent Thai Airways and Tiger.
Nok, viewed by some in airline politics as Thai's hard-to-please love-child, posted an 83.9 percent jump in its net profit last year to 618 million baht from 336 million in 2009.
Doubling the Phuket-Bangkok flights via Don Muang and lifting Chiang Mai-Bangkok via Suvarnabhumi from four flights a day to six shows that Nok is ready to grow.
Here's the new Nok schedule for Phuket-Bangkok:

Nok, 39 percent owned by Thai Airways International, has routes that crisscross 13 provinces and will increase services to seven of them this year. This will lift flights from 30 a day to 39.
In the Nok fleet are 10 Boeing 737-400s and two ATR-72 turboprops serving a network that covers 20 destinations nationwide. Seven Boeing 737-800s and four more ATR-72 turboprops are to be leased as Nok expands.
Nok may be hard to win over but has happily sponsored the February Valentine's Day Underwater Wedding Fair in Trang, now in its 15th year, with more than 30 couples expected to tie the knot.
