A BIG BLAZE at a Phuket City school today damaged a library and a storeroom housing new TVs and other electronic equipment valued at hundreds of thousands of baht.
Investigations into the 11.40am blaze at the Banthungkha School in Tungkha are just beginning. Police say arson or children smoking cigarettes could be the cause, along with a possible electrical fault.
Three firetrucks from the the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the nearby Rassada station in Phuket City fought the blaze, which took hold in a building countaining the school library and a large storeroom.
Children quickly sounded the alarm, and other children and teachers helped firemen to carry out smoke and possibly water-affected new equipmment.
The Phuket City school, for children from kindergarten to secondary level, reopened after the long annual holiday just this week.
Bicycles, a refrigerator, books and computers were destroyed. Only when teachers have the chance to test the new, expensive electronic equipment will the full extent of the cost of damage be known.
