Phuket Expats and Tourists in Trouble With the Law: The List

Sunday, February 26, 2012
PHUKET: Drawing conclusions about the latest list of expats who have allegedly broken Thai laws on Phuket is difficult.

There are inevitably a crop of drug-possessions and driving offences. Some of the offences are minor, others more alarming.

Some are the result of Phuket's expat scammers. Others? It's hard to tell.

For instance, we'd be keen to know more about what might have happened to the Russian gentleman who found himself charge in a dispute with a Patong jet-ski operator.

List are always unsatisfactory in that regard. But by releasing the names, the Phuket police are able to demonstrate that not all visitors come to Phuket for the sunshine.

These people have all been charged but some of them may in the end be found innocent.

On a recent visit to Phuket Provincial Prison, it was evident that while most of the expat prisoners shared one cell, others mixed more easily with the locals. To the guy who gave us the middle finger, all we can say is, we hope you are not doing 15 years.

Sadly, there's no separation of remand prisoners who have yet to face trial from those who have already been tried and convicted.

Here's the latest list of expats who have been charged with offences over the past three months.

The list will be presented to Phuket's honorary consuls when they meet with Phuket administrators on Monday.

" Stephen Taylor Britain November 21 Phuket airport construction with no permit "

Interesting offence, possibly serious. We know the present airport is hopelessly overloaded, and beset with a multitude of problems but that's no excuse.

What admirable intentions but agree he should have got a permit first. Where was he building the new airport? Give the police their due for the great detective work in uncovering this crime. What will the maximum penalty be in this case ? Deportation without parole ?

Please give us updates as this newsworthy item unfolds.

I am shocked to see 2 people arrested for Dangerous Driving. I would love to see the list of how many people are prosecuted for Dangerous Driving in Phuket, as I witness more than 100 instances every day. From speeding, undertaking, driving too close as well as jumping traffic lights.

Undertaking is definitely not worth dying for.

It would be interesting to see long time statistics based on nationality and then compare them to visitor numbers from respective countries to see which country has a disproportionately high number of criminal offences to their credit.

Just a question, K. Ed: there are many foreigners on the list cause "no work permit." How about the responsibility of the companies who employe expats without work prmit? Thanks in advance for your answer.

Interesting: "driving dangerously"
How long must be the list with Thai 'pro'-drivers and youngsters?

Ed.:

It would be very interesting if you could clarify some of the crimes commited and what penalties the persons might get:

- possession of restricted drug - what kind of drugs are restricted drugs in these matters?
- drink and drive
- drink and drive, no licence
- dangerous driving
- possession of marijuana
- production of illegal drug
- drug related offences in general
- no visa
- no work permit
- no visa, no work permit
- visa overstay
- Jet-ski fraud in dispute

More knowledge about the penalties in TH might hopefully scare some people from doing crimes in TH.
I guess some of these crimes would have been able to solve with fines or mediation between the parts involved?

Thanks in advance ed...

Were all of the people forced to leave the country?

Editor Comment:

Punishments are not specified. It also can't be assumed that all those charged were guilty.
