The car demolished part of a sala on its way into the water today

Phuket Expat Road Death: Swiss Man Drives into Sea at Rawai

Saturday, February 16, 2013
PHUKET: A Swiss man was killed when he drove his vehicle straight into the sea at Rawai in southern Phuket early today.

The 46-year-old man may have missed the turn to the right from Viset Road into Rawai Beach Road and continued on to his death.

Injured in the spectacular crash was the man's Philippina girlfriend, who is now in Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

The crash startled locals about 5.30am. Viset Road comes to an abrupt end near Rawai's sea gypsy village and even locals are sometimes caught unawares by the sharp right-hand turn.

Low tide and daylight revealed the crumpled silver car on the sand. It appeared the driver was alert enough to avoid a large memorial in front of Rawai pier but sideswiped a neighboring sala at speed and kept right on going into the sea.

It is not known at this stage whether the man died from the impact of the crash into the sea or drowned. Police believe he may have been drinking and unfamiliar with the road.

Phuketwan has the man's name but will not publish it because relatives have yet to be notified by Swiss envoys.

An out-of-proportion number of expats and tourists die on the roads on Phuket and in Thailand, mostly in motorcycle crashes.

The latest statistics available show that 119 people died on Phuket's road's in 2011. Thousands of other foreigners and locals are crippled and maimed in motorcycle crashes.

No figures have been released for 2012. The latest official Phuket monthly update on the Phuket road toll was for April last year.

No updated figures have been released since then.

No updated figures have also been released for drownings on Phuket - which mostly involve tourists - since then.

Couldn't a simple Road block, a fence or gate have not prevent this?

Why waiting so long in Thailand to prevent accidents from happening. Murphy's law. If anything can go wrong, It will go wrong.

Drunk or sober is for me not relevant in this case. If even locals find this road a "weird" situation and are still surprised by this "curve", action from authorities should be taken immediately.

What's atrocious is the government's new policy of not listing deaths. Thanks PW for the efforts to point this out.

Wow ...any guesses at the speed of this car? Rawai jetty is at the end of a 5km uninterrupted speedway. To get a feel for what's possible just stand beside Viset road any time of the day or night. I suggest the record would be over 150kph.
Has anyone ever seen police take any action against speeding on Viset Road...or anywhere else for that matter. Maybe PW could get some stats on the number of speeding tickets issued in a month / year. Proper policing is probably easier than dealing with dead bodies and the resultant paperwork.
How lucky no innocent bystanders / children were on that part of the jetty at that time.

I know that place of accident and understand the possibility of missing the curve, special in the dark and being a bit to fast. I feel sorry for the Philippine GF, who is now alone and injured in a foreign country, good possibility without money and without the familiar provider.

Trust a Swiss man to view the road like a block of Swiss cheese, he punched right through the hole in it.Who is going to be responsible for repairs to the building, before that collapses too?

It's been a year since this has passed.

Whoever is going to give their opinions better think about what they say.

Swiss man's daughter.

Why do these kind of things always happen at 5:30 a.m.? I wonder if it might have something to do with staying up all night drinking, and then idiotically deciding to DRIVE home rather than taking a tuk-tuk or taxi? Hmmm, I wonder....!
