Immigration on Phuket: Not that easy for one expat mother in Bali

Phuket Expat Mother Tells: 'My Bali Visa Run Nightmare'

Saturday, April 2, 2011
A PHUKET expat mother-of-two who set out to do a quick visa run to Bali has told of being stripped in an apparent search for drugs by officials at the Indonesian holiday island's airport.

The woman, an American who prefers to remain anonymous, is described by people who know her as ''the most unlikely drug-runner you could imagine.''

Here's what she says happened after her ''paradise to paradise'' flight to Denpassar in Bali late last month:

''Hi friends,

I just got back from Bali tonight. I thought it would be a lovely break and since Phuket now has a new direct cheap flight, another great option for my visa run destination. I had a bad experience upon arrival in Bali and am very glad to be home.

''Customs pulled me aside after clearing immigration at the 'Nothing to declare' aisle. They became instantly suspicious of me entering solo, for only five days, with little luggage and lots of stamps in my passport from all my various visa runs.

''They ransacked my bag and went thru it all with a fine toothed comb several times, then brought me to a private room to check it all again. Still unconvinced, they then had a lady strip search me in a small, dingy room.

''She kept pushing my stomach over and over and saying 'hard.. whats this?'...convinced I had swallowed pills and was a drug mule.

''She even later again showed and discussed my stomach to one of the customs policemen waiting, still deciding what to do with me. It was awful.

''Even though I knew I was innocent and had nothing to be paranoid over, I was so scared. Realising how powerless I was under their scrutiny and laws, whatever they wanted to do, they could.

''Meanwhile they are showing me the sign overhead 'Death penalty for drug traffickers'. After more than an hour they finally had me sign a paper and told me it said I was 'body searched... clear'.

''I have no idea, it was all in Indonesian. Their bullying tactics scarred my trip, as hard as I tried to let it go. It was rather traumatising.

''I was nervous to depart home today as I didn't know what they had been entering about me in their computer system.

''At immigration the officer stood for a long time reading his computer and kept glancing up at me. I could hear my heart pounding in my head.

''Finally he stamped me out.

''So, just a word of warning to share with you and your friends... if you ever go.

''I even had an empty ziploc bag that had a sliced apple I had eaten on the plane and they kept waving it at me, convinced I had carried drugs in it. I would not even bring prescription medicines or vitamins etc. if you go.

''They ripped apart my eyeglass case, tore my wallet and broke the zipper on my bag.

''An expat who lives there told me they are really cracking down now. They were clearly checking through other passengers' belongings as well.

''I am so relieved to be home and I don't ever want to go back. As much as some places still have appeal, the country has changed a lot and there is definitely a dark side.

''Eat, pray, love ... and get strip searched! What a bunch of hogwash that book is.

Be careful.''

Several people, most of them Australians, are being held in jail and face death after having been caught allegedly trafficking drugs into Bali.

Same happened to myself and GF at xmas...she had a large stain on her brand new case bought the day before in central...apparently the chemical xray said it was cocaine...gf got searched internally and we were detained for 45mins before giving the all clear...when the case arrived in bali the zip was bust and there was a strange sticky substance on case...maybe this is what tested positive...think there is a low accuracy rate with those machines. Scary experience..will not be going back..

I have just read the American womans horror story about Bali. I first went there in 1979 and it was certainly a lot different then. I lived there from 19991 until 2001 and luckily got out before the bombs. During that time whenever I entered Bali I was always hassled by immigration often for some form of baksheesh. Although I could speak fluent Indonesian and Balinese and had a valid business visa I was constantly questioned and asked for money or "presents". This story is just another in a long line that shows the type of place this tourist destination has become...horrendous traffic, pollution, dirty beaches and lots of crime...all my long term friends got out many years ago and think themselves lucky...so do I.

Returned from Bali a couple of weeks ago - customs completely emptied my bag and it was clear to me they were not even sure what they were particularly looking for from the X-ray. Even my tampons got pulled out in front of other passengers and I was interrogated on what it was for!??

Shame they are not so efficient when one of their tourist boats runs aground-and all the valuables out of the passenger's salvaged luggage disappears!

Perhaps Air Asia should be notified that their new route is getting some bad publicity. Certainly makes me think twice about going there.

Anonymous: was it customs in Bali or here on the way back? Perhaps not funny at the time, but just imagining the clever customs agents holding it up..

This could happen in any foreign country in the SE Asia region. It's at their discretion whether they take you aside or not. Drug mules are chosen because hopefully they don't look like stereotypical carriers. Desperate expats have been known to fall to the lure of drug money. True the experience should not be so harrowing. Such is life.

Mike, you don't think that being strip searched, your stomach poked and asking to sign something in Indonesia is distressful? So if you are taken in a room by an Indonesian agent strip searched and examined you would be ok with it. The person understands they have to check for drugs coming in. It is when they repeatedly made an issue of an empty baggie and they way she was at their mercy, that they could have falsely accused her and she was powerless that was so harrowing.

I can't believe how rude comments there are!!!! Where is your humanity??
No one is wining here, this is simply how things went and she offers her words of heads-up for the rest of us. The experience must have been terrifying (would likely be so for anyone), and it is a fact that from time to time, people go to jail, innocent or not. It is very good this subject has been brought up for discussion. The law systems in the SE Asia are very famous for the unfair trials, long, long waits and inhuman living conditions. You wouldn't like to end up in the system yourself just because someone is eagerly fulfilling their task of finding drug mules, would you?

After living in Bali for more than 11 years I reluctantly left because of the amount of corruption in all government departments, and the "presents" expected by police for planting drugs on unsuspecting tourists. I have now joined the 'expats who despise Bali' crowd and have no intention of ever spending any of my money on that island again

I know her and she sent the letter above to about four of her friends. One of them sent it to me. She never sent it to the editor.

She was basically warning her friends to be careful and not to be taking anything that could be construed as an illegal drug. Warning of the danger that there is a possibility to be falsely accused and sharing how this was terrifying. (not the search)

I thought it would be good to get the word out and warn others just in case someone was planning to go so I asked her if I could send it to the editor whom had already received news about her experience from someone else.

I wonder had this happened to a man, with a COMPLETE strip search if Lord Jim and others would react differently. The comments reflect some of the expats men's attitudes towards foreign women.

But no Lord Jim I don't think she drinks a lot of wine and is not on Thai Visa so therefor she is not a wining expat on Thai Visa.

However YOU are obviously a WHINING expat with nothing useful to contribute.

''The most unlikely drug-runner you could imagine.''?

Sounds like an ideal drug runner.

If one travels frequently, then this sort of thing can happen. Not pleasant, but get over it.

Genuine tourists in Thailand don't go on visa runs and have their passports "full of visas". Most of these "visa run tourists" are working illegally or involved in some such criminal activities in Thailand. If you're not a real tourist or you don't have a work visa for Thailand, don't bother coming because the REAL ex-pats don't want you here, and neither do the Thais. She got off lightly in Bali but she should have been arrested in Phuket and deported with a lifelong ban from ever re-entering Thailand. These kind of "tourists" with zero respect for Thai law simply aren't wanted here by anybody. Leave now and never come back.

@TBA - you base your ugly views based on ZERO information about this woman. She is a 'real' expat and is very much valued by all who know her, both expat and Thai. Keep your completely unfair and wrong views to yourself next time. Based on your comment alone, I could assume you were an intolerant, uninformed idiot, but I'm hopeful that you are much more and much better than these silly remarks you've made here.
