Alex Good, 25, has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving, but was allowed to go by police at Chalong, in southern Phuket, immediately after the incident. Police are holding Mr Good's passport.
About 12.30am in Patak Road, Kata, a rented pickup being driven by Mr Good knocked over a motorcycle being ridden by Wanida Pimsen, 23, who was making a turn to her workplace at a 7-Eleven store, near the Tesco-Lotus Express.
Khun Wanida is in Patong Hospital. A friend riding pillion was not hurt.
Police confirmed that Mr Good had been confronted and attacked by onlookers after the incident. Officers said he had not been drinking.
