Police and volunteers recover the two bodies on a quiet Phuket coast road

Phuket Execution: Bodies Dumped Near Five-Star Resort

Tuesday, May 31, 2011
PHUKET: A MAN who says he ''played dead'' and survived today alerted Phuket police to the execution-style murders of two people whose bodies have been found near a five-star resort on a quiet west coast road.

Police are now looking for a gang of up to 10 men and the female leader who apparently ordered the killings and planned to roll all three victims into the sea, according to the man who ''played dead.''

However, the bodies lodged in jungle on a steep slope close to Trisara and the Anadaman White Beach Resort on the Phuket west coast road between Nai Thon and Layan.

About 8.30am police found the bodies of a woman, her hands tied, killed with a blow to the head that probably came from an axe, and on top of her a man, hands handcuffed and killed by a bullet behind the ear.

Both appeared to have been blindfolded at some stage.

The man who escaped told police that he had been blindfolded and beaten and pretended to be dead, but managed to stagger early today to alert Phuket people on the lonely road.

He said the three were construction contractors who had come to Phuket from Krabi. Their borrowed Krabi-registered vehicle, with blood staining the tray, was found on the other side of Phuket later this morning.

The man told police the three responded last night to a telephone call from a woman and went to meet her at an address on Thepkasattri Road, where they were jumped by about 10 men.

The surviving victim said he was blindfolded and unable to say precisely what happened, apart from hearing the gunshot and suffering the beating before pretending to be dead.

Police from Tatchatchai are continuing to question the man. Officers initially suspected revenge and drugs could be part of the motive for the Phuket killings.

However, they have since named the dead woman as U-rai Choochern, aged 50, and the man who survived as her husband, Sanit.

Husband survived the "beating!", wife killed by an axe, and who is the third one who got shot? Strange that not shot all three of them, if you want to kill them!

What is going on in phuket these days executions gangland style ordered by a Mrs BIG, oops there goes another load of tourists

Well, Mrs BIG or Mr Not Big Enough. Let's wait to see. Every place the world over has murders and murderers, sadly. Don't let it spoil your holiday.

There are areas in the UK with these sorts of dangerous criminal activities.

But they are not normally places you would go to for your holidays.

People get murdered in Blackpool and Cornwall, even in Wales and Scotland occasionally. It has yet to be clearly established that a gang was involved.

Well I come from a holiday town and tourist destination where just one death would be big enough to nearly shut the whole place down.

But Phuket seems to be attracting a very large amount of these deadly events nowadays

Statistics don't reflect any enormous increase in murders on Phuket. Expat residents have most to fear from other expat residents. Murders involving holidaymakers are rare.

"Expat residents have most to fear from other expat residents."

I am curious where you get this information from. I usually read this website and from what I can remember recently the only expat-expat killing is the unproven case of the Italian from Phi Phi.

I really wonder how many "natural deaths and suicides" go unreported. I would suggest that even one murder is one too many and several a serious problem. Since the majority would seem to not be expat against expat (or at least not convincingly so) throwing out a comment like the above seems not to be taking reality into consideration.

Martin, you comment is full of inaccuracies and doesn't warrant full publication, which is why it has been moderated. The top of your head is not a reliable source.
The top of my head is no more reliable, but I do get to talk to honorary consuls on Phuket about murders, see police figures regularly, and hear of reports through the Thai media. And I am not paranoid.

The number of expats murdered on Phuket is relatively small. You're welcome to do a search on all news sites using ''murder'' and come back with a huge list. But that's unlikely, because there haven't been many. A German man was killed by a Thai outside a 7-Eleven last year - the murderer is now serving a long sentence. Since 2009, a Singapore expat was accused of killing a Canadian property developer; the killer of a Scottish man in his Phuket City apartment has never been traced; (two deaths in one week sparked waves of expat paranoia); An American allegedly killed a bar hostess; A British man allegedly killed an American; An Italian expat allegedly killed another Italian expat. The other cases you mention were all-Thai affairs. There are no mysterious bodies on the records. Going back beyond 2008, there was the Swedish tourist killed at Mai Khao and the Norwegian attacked and killed on his motorcycle. Roughly, the average number of expats murdered on Phuket each year is two - or in a bad year, three. And some of them appear to be victims of other expats. Given the proportions of Thais to expats, I'd say the real risks are obvious. If there were ''natural deaths and suicides'' unreported, the honorary consuls would be sounding the alarm. They aren't.

That's Phuket.

What happens in central and northern Thailand is Andrew Drummond's patch. Best ask him.

Hi Mr Ed...any reason why my post on this subject has not been published?

It's not fair on the individuals involved to speculate in that kind of way. Sorry. These are real people.
