ONE OF Phuket's biggest drug hauls - a horde of yah ice valued at more than two million baht - has been siezed in a double-sting that concluded in the car park at Tesco-Lotus supermarket in Phuket City.
The sting led back to a mastermind inside Nakkorn Si Tammarat Prison and now has Phuket Prison officials working to prevent similar drugs crimes by telephone from occurring here.
The saga began with the arrest of Pitchaya Suttikatsuk, 22, with 4.4 grams of yah ice methamphetamine. She was then used in a sting to capture Jamnong Chumbub, 38, with 10 yah ba tablets.
Khun Jamnong in turn placed an order by making a telephone call to ''Mr Pab'' inside Nakkorn Si Tammarat Prison.
As a result of the call, Khun Jamnong met A-Ram Auyeam, 48, in the car park at Tesco-Lotus in Phuket City at noon yesterday, where police clased the net and nabbed him with 2000 yah ba pills and 197.4 grams of yah ice.
Khun A-Ram confessed and said he was to be paid 20,000 baht for making the delivery. Khun Prab is likely to face an extended sentence.
As reported exclusively in Phuketwan, more than 50 mobile telephones - or more appropriately cell phones - have been discovered at Phuket Prison in April alone after being hurled over the high outer wall.
Prison authorities have talked with Phuket Police Commander Major General Pekad Tantipong, who oversaw a media presentation of Khun A-Ram and Khun Jamnong today.
While there's no concern that prisoners from Nakkorn Si Tammarat could be in touch with inmates on Phuket, patrols around the outer wall are to increase at key times to deter attempts at hurling telephones to prisoners.
Prison authorities are also seeking budget from Bangkok to build a solitary confinement cell where ''Mr Big'' figures could be more easily monitored.
If the phone-tossing continues, Phuket authorities will consider stringing a net around the inside of the wall to make detection of the telephones easier.
