Live dolphins are loved but not protected on Phuket

Dolphinarium Passes Tests, Protests Likely

UPDATING All Day, Every Day

OFFICIALS confirmed on Thursday that the Fisheries Department has approved the importation of a number of dolphins to the Nemo Dolphinarium on Phuket - despite opposition from the holiday island's expat community. Any airline that flies in the dolphins is expected to face sanctions.

Original Report

PHUKET: Opponents of the Phuket Dolphinarium may awaken Thursday to the news they dread if a Facebook posting tonight proves correct.

The post on the 'Phuket Says No To Dolphin Shows' page reports: ''I'm so very sorry to tell you that the Department of Fisheries has approved the import permit for the Dolphins coming to the dolphin prison in Chalong. We are extremely sad about this.''

Opposition to the Dolphinarium, already constructed beside the Phuket Zoo in southern Phuket, has been strong among Phuket's expat residents.

Protesters hoped that the process of having captive dolphins authorised to take part in the show would be halted by international or Thai authorities.

So far, the entrepreneurs behind the Dolphinarium have overcome all hurdles.

If it proves correct on Thursday that the Department of Fisheries has approved the import permits, then the new marine show could be open some time in Phuket's tourism high season, which begins on November 1.

Shocked by the bloody dolphin killings and captures in Japan and a growing revulsion with the treatment of dolphins at theme parks around the world, opponents of the Phuket Dolphinarium were hoping that accusations that the dolphins would be kept in confined pools at risk to their health would lead Thai authorities to ban the project.

Department of Fisheries approval is among the final steps needed for the Dolphinarium to import dolphins and open the show.

One last hope for the Phuket protesters may lie in targetting any airline that proposes bringing the dolphins onto the island with potential sanctions from animal lovers.

Another nail in the coffin of animals. With Tiger Parks, Monkeys, eagles, Elephant rides and now dolphins, are all of the worlds animals just for money?

Maybe someone should inform the PM

I thought Thailand was trying to attract high quality tourists. High quality tourists are educated and will be insulted by this and not come to a country that is cruel. Also what does Buddha say about keeping animals? today it seems the Baht is the first thing people think of.

Anyone who has visited Phuket Zoo, will know only too well of the discraceful conditions to which the animals are kept. The horror of housing Dolphins in a confined area is quite unacceptable. Is there anyone in Thailand left that has the compassion to stop this madness, and close both facilities down ?

All hurdles are perhaps overcome with the right oil.

Le bl??vec,
its no different to any other country where people believe the tourist dollar can be obtained by using animals as an attraction.

Issues like this have often been dealt with by mass protests and the refusal to allow tour busses to gain entry. I have no idea why that works in Phuket but it certainly seems to when it is a more Thai-centric issue.

Again a highlight for the chinese buses.
Phuket will not much remains of the business, except even more traffic on the streets in chalong.

We need to sit down and have a talk with the dept. of fisheries; all the permits allowing captivity and unjust suffering has to come to a screeching halt!
