More direct flight Scandinavians will be seeing Phuket from the air soon

Phuket Direct, Europe First for THAI

Thursday, June 30, 2011
PHUKET: Thai Airways International will fly direct from the Danish capital, Copenhagen, to Phuket from November 11 three times a week, the airline announced today.

It's the first direct link to Phuket from Europe by Thailand's national carrier, an airline marketing spokesperson said. The flights are one-way only so return passengers will have to fly back to Copenhagen from Bangkok.

Executive vice president Pandit Chanapai said the Boeing 747-400 flights wouild ''make it easier than ever to travel from Scandinavia straight to Phuket.''

Flights to Phuket will leave Copenhagen on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flights from Bangkok to Copenhagen already operate on a daily basis.

Nond Kalinta, General Manager Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe for Thai Airways, told Phuketwan in March at ITB Berlin that the airline planned to expand services to Europe from next Phuket high season.

Flights to Phuket from Austria are also being considered.

Charter flights have mostly been used by Scandinavians to fly direct to Phuket. Many don't stay on the island.

They tend to prefer the quieter natural settings of neighboring Phang Nga and Krabi, leaving west coast Patong and Karon to an increasing number of Australian and Russian visitors.

The new routes are part of THAI's expansion plans in Europe, made possible by the recent growth of its fleet. THAI also plans a Thai Wings budget brand to compete directly with regional low cost carrier AirAsia.

Phuket International Airport, where passenger arrivals and departures topped seven million in 2010, is about to undertake an expansion that will grow capacity to 15 million in 2014.

Some observers believe that such is the likely increase in tourists that Phuket airport will continue to struggle to keep pace with 15 percent growth or more each year.

THAI earlier this week also announced the launch of a new three-times-a-week Bangkok-Brussels direct flight from November 17.

I have always been mystified as to why THAI never did establish direct flights to Phuket from Scandinavia. In the high season there are something like 25 flight per week arriving in Phuket, and with no competition from THAI the charter companies have had it all for themselves..There is huge untapped potential for THAI here, and its been going on for a long time too.

Knowing Scandinavians majority do stay on Phuket island when landing there on charters. That's why the charter companies as well has several direct flights to Krabi.. Yes many goes to Khao Lak, but by far majority deffently stays in Phuket which is still a major destination for scan people and has been that for plenty of years. Would be interesting to hear where Phuket wan has their information from......

No worries, would just be interesting as the comment is not true if looking at actual numbers. Count families with trolleys and couples walking around in Kata/Karon in the high season and you will count much more scan people than Aussies and russians... Living/working there myself so know facts. Good that THAI are launching as this means even more advertisement to Thailand from Denmark - but we should not forget the importance of what the charters are giving and has been doing to the island

I work for the largest Scandinavian tour operator, and currently around 40% of our customers that land in Phuket go straight to Khao Lak. Another 20% go to Ao Nang with the rest, around 40%, staying on the island. The trend is less Phuket and more Khao Lak and Ao Nang.

You might know some but guess you don't have correct facts even if you "might" work for one of them... Why to take 3 hours buss ride from Phuket airport when you can go only 30 minutes from Krabi - knowing that the largest operators has several charters to Krabi airport as well.. Fact is around 70% stays in Phuket (which is several beaches of course) more or less the rest goes to Khao Lak - few to Samui and few to Aonang. Go to the operators web site and check it out or speak to TAT or the operators directly - Volume hotels are still in Phuket which is still key for the scan market. So let's hope it can stay as this market has many years of history on the island and has worked with us for so many years

Sorry guys - just wanted to stay on facts - it was not meant for the article at all but for the comment of one of the readers :-)

I do work for the largest tour company in Scandinavia. And yes, even though we have flights directly to Krabi airport we still have a significant number of customers going there that arrives at Phuket. The reason is that its rather popular to have 1 week in Aonang followed by a week in Khao Lak, 1 week roundtrip and 1 or 2 weeks in Aonang after that and so on, numerous combination trips are available. Plus the number of flights to Krabi are fewer and so don't match with the dates people want to go, flights get fuller quicker etc. Think what you want after your "counting trolleys in Kata" experience. I don't really care.

It might be true facts for your tour agency but most people I know don't even fly charter, they fly to Bangkok with schedule flights and then head to their destination.

Just to highlight the fact that just one tour agency don't know the real numbers.
