Phuket Crackdown Police Nab 53, Drugs and Cash Haul

Sunday, February 13, 2011
PHUKET police have hauled in 53 people over illegal drugs and weapons in the space of just two days of an island-wide crackdown.

The campaign, ordered by Phuket Police Commander Pekad Tantipong, kept officers at all eight Phuket police stations busy through February 10 and February 11.

Hauled in with the drug dealers were quantities of ya bah, ya ice and illegal guns. As well, police seized 300,000 baht in cash.

Major General Pekad said that in Phuket City alone, police raids took in 92.8 grams of ya ice 1527 ya bah pills and 129,780 baht. He added that he thought police in Chalong and Patong-Kathu needed to work harder.

Well done to all police involved.
You can take back control of the island if you try.
Now sort out the tuk tuks and jetskis and you will attract more classier tourists.
Police in Chalong and Patong-Kathu work harder please?
Otherwise, nice going.

Well done to the police concerned...yeh right!! A token effort at best.I am offered hard drugs on Patong beach near daily..They are 'in your face' available so why aren't they all arrested. Like so many occurences here, it is only the people who don't play the 'tea-money'who get busted. Robin.. your quote; "You can take back control of the island if you try" is not correct, dont you see that they already have control...
Seriously tho' many of Phukets multitude of problems could be helped to be solved as simple as giving the police a decent salary .I have a couple of friends who are cops and the wages and conditions they work under will never have them expend more energy than absolutely neccessary just to stay employed. They are rediculously under paid for a challenging and dangerous job.

"They are rediculously under paid for a challenging and dangerous job" Their choice.

WOWEee jus-dis...clever guy!!! But, the gist of the post is this: If the cops are paid a decent salary, and not have to depend on 'tea money' to top-up their meagre income the amount of REAL policing would become very self evident, very quick smart..no more "looking the other way" when apprehending the crims who did pay "tea money'.This applies to all and every scam, rippoff, and extortion, which apparently is rife on Phuket..These things are ALL only happening , and continueing to happen without fear of justice being done, because of "tea money"...Get it now? Nothing at all to do with "their choice!!" Hmmmm

Hello...any reason my reply to just-dis and info on lack of visible policing has not been posted?

Because there's no evidence that all police cover up crimes or that all police are corrupt. Sweeping generalisations are an inadequate response to the contention that a pay rise for police, with enforcement of corruption laws, would reduce corruption.

One thing that this forum is good at ...presently a rosy, misleading interpretation of goings on and refusing to post anything that shows otherwise.PC gone beserk!! And the "head-in-the-sand attitude at its best.Pretend all is well and it will be!! Sorry but it doesn't work that way.

This isn't a conventional chat forum, David, It's a place for responses to specific articles. Cogent arguments are fine. People who constantly adopt the ''TIT (this is Thailand)'' approach and have nothing to add can use their usual space in their usual place. If you think reporting a police crackdown that shows there are too many drugs on the island is presenting a rosy picture, you've failed to read the article in rushing to say ''TIT.''

I have NOT mentioned "TIT" here at all!!!You do have a knack of twisting peoples words to suit your game mr ed!One police bust now and again to, as you say "show there are too many drugs on the island"is a flash in the pan event. As i said earlier...near every single time i and friends go to the beach {day time to boot!!] we are offered drugs of every type...right there in your face.I say to the guys; What about the police? Dont you worry about them?...No problem MR...police are friends me, is the reply. If you ,yourself got out and about a bit more at street level, where the real problems are, instead of just reporting on some infrequent bust happening you would see that drugs are a HUGE problem and like all policing here,is severly lacking an ongoing, serious blitz on drugs as well as many other dubious activities that are also "in your face" and occuring with no fear of justice!!So i stand strongly by my words "painting a rosey picture" in the sence i intended..IE ! by reading this report some naiive people would really think that this was a significant result...it is FAR from a significant result.A mere drop in the ocean! You wont hear any more about the wide availability of the scourge of drugs and the policing of/lack of until the next headlines in a couple of months time.

I assume you've reported to the police on every occasion you've been offered drugs. Or is that up to others?

Hahaha mr ed...I've ENJOYED living here for some 18 years now, and i intend to keep ENJOYING living here!!!If your response is meant to be humerous, you fail misserably as a comedian.
If it was not meant to be humerous it only proves to me how far out of touch with reality you really are.You fail misserably in the reality stakes as well. Get out of your "phuket wan clothes" and take a good look around the place and see what is really going on , as just another observer.I realise you are on a "must protect the image of Phuket at all costs" mission, but sadly people reading the issues on here are being given, as i said "a rosy misinterpretation of the truth!" Living in denial is not the way to have the real changes this place needs. And surely, even you cannot deny that it is long overdue for some serious sorting out of the policing issues.Tuk-tuks,jet skis, parking space availability, drug selling, illegal taxis, late opening bars, helmets on motorcycles, counterfeit copies of EVERYTHING immaginable etc, etc, ad nauseum. All of these things are flourishing because of lack of real policeing..Yes? I wouldn't dare suggest that they are all involved in tea money giving.....No way!

I guess that means No, you get offered drugs and do nothing about it.
