Crime Suppression Division police from Bangkok raided a Phuket cockfighting ring at Rawai yesterday, apprehending 42 people and four roosters.
The alleged gamblers, 40 men and two women, attracted the attention of nearby residents in Soi Sounwat Moo 1, behind the Rawai temple.
Police sought bail of 12,000 baht for the accused. Some were able to pay, avoiding a night in the lockup. All the accused are due to face court today. The fate of the four roosters is not known.
Like football betting, cockfighting occurs on Phuket and is usually tolerated unless the commotion brings unwanted attention.
Cockfighting, a traditional form of gambling throughout Asia, is frowned upon in the 21st century as much for the cruelty to animals as the betting.
