A HUGE blaze lit up the sky in Phuket City tonight as firemen on 13 firetrucks fought to bring flames under control.
The blaze broke out about 7pm near one of Phuket City's biggest t-junctions, where the main road running south to Chalong and Rawai meets the turnoff to the weekend market and the city red-light district of Poonpol.
It razed goods being stored at Naka Recycling, destroying machinery and plastic and threatening to bring down a corrugated iron roof on firemen as they trained hoses on the blaze.
The fire took about two hours to bring under control and slowed traffic moving south to a crawl.
Fire officers said it would take until tomorrow before they had the chance to assess damage and estimate the value of the destruction.

At least the blaze occurred in Phuket City, not Phuket Town . . . if it had happened in Phuket Town, some really important historic buildings would probably have been destroyed.
