indiatimes.com "Iranian private carrier Mahan Air, which has had a dodgy record with allegations of forged acquisition of three Boeing 747-400 aircraft and a ban within the European Union for a year...".

Not altogether correct, the aircraft were subject to a worldwide ban and should not have been allowed to touch down in India or Thailand. Flights are supposedly limited only within Iranian airspace, but Balli Aviation leased the aircraft to an Armenian Company, Blue Sky (also owned by Balli), who subleased them to Mahan Air to get round the ban.

It would appear that the civil aviation authorities of both India and Thailand have been extremely lax, to say the least. See:http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2010/February/10-nsd-131.html

Sorry to bore you with another follow up on this story, but it does have a Phuket connection which a reader or two may find interesting.

Further research shows that the TDO (temporary denial order) against Mahan Airways Boeing 747-400s was renewed on July 1 2011.

A friend of mine was interviewed in London in 2008 for the position of 747 fleet commander (5 aircraft) for Blue Sky Airlines (a British Company) at a salary considerably higher than normal for such qualifications. Having been given details of the 747 fleet then told that he would be based in Teheran he twigged the catch and abruptly walked out of the interview and informed the relevant authorities that this was a sanction-busting ploy.

Little was done outside of the US and EU to enforce the ban, hence Mahan Airways operates its 747s quite openly to Phuket and Bangkok seemingly without hindrance.

Rather more curious is the fact that Phuket Airlines purchased one of the questionable 747-400s from Blue Sky Airlines in October 2010. This particular aircraft, re-registered in Thailand as HS-AGN, is wet leased to Saudi Arabian Airlines, so it has an all Thai crew. This therefore makes me wonder if the Mahan Airways 747 flight deck crews are Thai.

Phuket Airlines is very much alive in the aircraft leasing business and has experienced 747 pilots. Intriguing possibilities exist in almost everything.
