PHUKET: A rare hornbill was rescued by Kusoldharm Foundation charity workers today after the bird became trapped in power lines in Phuket City.
Workers carefully used a net on a long pole to bring the hornbill down safely in Narid Road about 6.20pm. The bird is being cared for at Phuket Zoo and will be released into the wild when fully recovered.
About 100 hornbills live in a sanctuary on Tapao Noi island, off Phuket's southeast coast.
The Royal Thai Navy supervised the island. The Navy recently asked the Phuket Governor's Committee of the Environment for permission to replace an ageing timber walkway with a concrete one to enable more ecotourists to visit the island and enjoy the peace there.
A lighthouse dating from the 1890s sits on the island. The Navy hopes to create walking trails to take in the hornbills and the lighthouse.
