PHUKET: Two men accused of attempting to rob a catamaran moored off Phuket escaped from police custody this afternoon and were only recaptured after a pursuing officer was struck in the head with a bottle.
The two men, Niwat Doungmane, 21, and Tirapon Malasan, 20, were being transferred in a locked truck from Phuket's Chalong district to Phuket Provincial Court when they broke free about 3pm near the Phuket Post Office in Phuket City.
The catamaran theft suspects headed into Phuket City's Bang Yai canal, pursued by two officers armed with guns. One of the officers was struck by a bottle and later received 10 stitches in a cut to his cheek.
The bandits remained on the loose for about 20 minutes until additional officers arrived from Phuket City Police Station and the escaped pair surrendered.
Niwat and Tirapon were arrested after reports that the DaVinci catamaran had been robbed late last night.
Reports that shots were fired remain unconfirmed, police said, and the men carried only a knife stolen from the catamaran when arrested.
Among other items that were allegedly stolen were two inexpensive disposable underwater cameras and a few coins of various denominations.
Police have yet to determine how the two men escaped from a locked police truck.

I'm guessing that once these guys arrived back at the station, they were administered some concrete therapy to address their behavioral problems.
