One of the steep tracks at Phuket's beautiful Cape Promthep

Phuket Cape Sunset Tourist Tumbles on Steep Track, Falls to Her Death

Wednesday, August 3, 2011
UPDATE

The woman who drowned was identified as Yula Suwan, 20, from Chiang Rai, who had been living on Phuket for five years and worked in Patong. Onlookers were upset that Ms Yula died because it took 30 minutes for a boat to reach her.

Original Report

PHUKET: A woman has died in a Phuket hospital late this afternoon after falling from a steep pathway at one of Phuket's most scenic locations, Cape Promthep, where hundreds of tourists flock each fine evening to view the sunset.

Tonight's spectacular show will be tinged with sadness after the woman, a Thai who was visiting the viewing area with her expat boyfriend, tumbled and fell into the sea.

Lifeguards sent a jet-ski from Kata beach about 5.20pm because the woman was in a position where it was difficult to reach her from the base of the cliff. A boat also assisted in retrieving the woman.

However, after being transferred by ambulance to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, the woman died.

The car park and viewing spots at Cape Promthep has been enhanced over the years and smoking and dirnking alcohol were banned from the cape not long ago.

Perilous tracks lead down to the southernmost tip of Phuket from the viewing area, with Phuket's iconic palmyra growing there.
