PHUKET: A new ''security camera central'' on Phuket was opened toselected media today for the first time with Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation President Paiboon Upatising acting as the island's cheerful Big Brother.
Newly reelected to his role, Khun Paiboon was keen to show off the biggest centre on Phuket for security cameras.
About 250 camera images can be viewed from the new centre which is, somewhat oddly, at the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation's Hospital in Koh Sireh, east of Phuket City.
The reason? According to officials, there was space at the hospital. The administrative organisation's ''security camera central'' duplicates some of the access to cameras available at Phuket City police headquarters.
But organisation officials say that some people have asked police for footage and the police haven't been able to supply it, which is one reason why a more public centre was deemed to be a good thing.
With Phuket attracting more young families with chlldren, Khun Paiboon believes security cameras can supply an extra reason for people to come to Phuket.
He says the cameras not only work as a preventative measure, but also have been used by Phuket police to provide evidence to make arrests.
The centre so far views images from cameras in Phuket City, including Rassada and Kor Kaew, central Phuket Town and Chalong. Khun Paiboon hopes to keep expanding the number of cameras until it's Phuket-wide.

This is really cool thing. Is there any public webcams available to view traffic etc.?
