Flashback to 2008 when the Sky Dive Reef was sent to the bottom

Phuket Builds Own Reefs to Ease Dive Congestion

Thursday, February 24, 2011
OFFICIALS were gathering at Phuket's Bang Tao beach today to launch a large artificial reef project, designed to take the pressure of tourist numbers off damaged natural corals.

A total of 1630 large concrete blocks are to be sunk to the ocean bed at a cost of 7.996 million baht. The artificial reef will be in two segments, one at the southern end extending towards Kamala, and the other off Bang Tao.

Each of the ''reefs'' will extend about 1.5 kilometres.

Paitoon Panchaipoorn, of Phuket's Marine Coast Preservation Office, has coordinated the project with the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organistion, local authorities, Marine Transport, the Royal Thai Navy and the Fisheries department.

Experts agree that Phuket needs to create artificial reefs to ensure the long-term future of the natural corals. Increasing numbers of tourists have accelerated damage to the reefs, with a crisis being triggered in April and May last year by the bleaching phenomenon.

The monsoons arrived late, leaving the reefs without cloud cover. As a result, large areas of reefs, especially those in shallow waters, have been damaged and will take years to recover.

Bans have been imposed on some popular dive sites in an effort to speed the return to health of the reefs and tighter controls are envisaged over dive boats.

Phuket's most notable attempt at constructing an appealing artificial reef from old aircraft and helicopters failed in 2008 when tides and fishing trawlers were blamed for breaking up the fuselages.

The square cement blocks they sunk since many years are not good as diver's artificial reefs. They attract few fish and are just good to stop trawlers.

Another point; they never invite local dive shops to official meetings and they make it as they plan, without listening to those who need them.

Please do yourself and everybody a favor and go and dive on the concrete blocks that have been underwater for more than five years. Let me tell you what you find on and near them. You will find barnacles and Lion Fish, not much else. The fishes have all been taken away by the fishermen and trawlers.
Dream on pipe dreamers, game over.

8 million baht for a dive project off of Bang Tao beach, huh? ...Where the only nearby dive group is run by the German heading the Thailand Dive Association? THAT beach? On the side of the island which can't be dived except during high season? THAT beach?

I smell something fishy, and it isn't the ocean. Any artificial reef should be on the OTHER side of the island, close to Chao Fah harbor where almost all diveboats dock each night. It'd save fuel, be easily accessible to most five groups, and be accessible year-round. But noooooo. *sigh* -- "This Is Thailand."

A concrete block is not good for much except as a wave-break and anchor. They'd have been mighty useful as permanent mooring places during the King's Cup regatta, but don't do much for reef fish, who prefer something with plenty of holes to hide themselves in. Corals, too: they respond best to something with plenty of surface area for new coral growths to cling to.

As the others have pointed out, concrete blocks are of not much use for building an artificial reef.

How much? That's a chunk of change for achieving, what will almost certainly be, minimal or non-existent results. Nothing unusual there.

Why didn't they consult the dive community as to suitable objects and location?
