A BUG-SELLER who made a proper pest of himself by stealing from two Russian tourists has been arrested by Phuket police and charged with theft.
The man, Patipan Nonpayom, 33, confessed to the crime and to another similar instance around Karon, the popular beach destination south of Patong.
Police apprehended Khun Patipan at 9pm, two hours after the young Russian friends discovered their bag had gone missing.
Khun Patipan, a vendor who pushes his fried bugs around the beachfront on a mobile trolley, was questioned by an officer as a potential witness to the theft.
An alert officer noticed a camera, which Khun Patipan said was his. Not true. Pulled in for further questioning at Chalong police station, Khun Patipan confessed.
The two young women had their camera and mobile telephone returned soon afterwards. Khun Patipan admitted stealing the bag that the women left while they went to the beach, then hiding the bag among the frond of a low palm tree.
One of the Russian friends checked in at the Sugarpalm Resort in Karon on May 22 while her friend stayed at another resort nearby. They head home on June 3.
