Bomb disposals experts check the pickup at the Phuket quarry today

Phuket Bomb Capable of Demolishing 10 Storey Building, Says Disposals Expert

Monday, December 23, 2013
PHUKET: A bomb found inside a pickup on Phuket had the power to flatten a 10-storey building, police said today after defusing the device.

A clock mechanism linked to two 100 kilo gas tanks inside the pickup was due to go off at 2.15pm on August 1 - just a few minutes after a second small bomb actually detonated nearby in Phuket City.

Officers came across the pickup and the bomb inside it by chance. The vehicle was parked outside Phuket City Police Station.

Colonel Sermphan Sirikong, Superintendent of Phuket City Police Station, said today that the pickup had been parked in the car park at the station since October.

''Officers thought it could belong to a resident nearby and left it until we needed to clear the area,'' he said. ''All the cars were moved except this one.''

When the suspicious device was discovered inside the cabin of the pickup, police organised to have it carried by a crane to a quarry in southern Phuket where disposals experts from Southern Thailand confirmed today that it was a bomb.

The number plate was a fake and the pickup's owner had been shot dead on May 9 in Songkhla, a southern province.

With the bomb appearing to have been set at a site away from the police station to go off on August 1, minutes after a small blast that caused no injuries at the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, police are now investigating Phuket's first potentially serious bomb incident.

If I've told you once, I've told you a million times... don't exaggerate.

Another news source says two 15kg tanks.

Capable of demolishing a 10 storey building? Yes, we believe you.

Ah, I forget - you just print what you are told.

The 15-kilos containers have been modified to about 100 kg each, Buster. I grow tired of your pathetic cynicism so Goodbye, Buster. ''We don't have time to waste on you'' is our early NY resolution. Happy posting - somewhere else.

Are we now back to serious searcings at entrances to car parks, like Central, Jungceylon, Big C and police car parks? Maybe? The interesting part: A stolen vehicle, murdered owner, with fake plates could rest for minimum 2 month in the police car park area. The bomb is only 'the creme' on top.
Amazing Thailand. A never outdated slogan!

Not at all sure about this story, first, someone drove the pickup, with a faulty timer, that should have gone off at 2:15pm August 21, to the police station sometime in October, at least 2 months after failing to detonate, where the police first noticed it, but failed to investigate even after a "small" explosion at the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation. Now they move it, through Phuket still, as far as we know, attached to a timer that could have triggered due to vibration/movement by the crane. Are we sure this story is true? Oh, as for the Phuket wan photographer and the person in the photo, if it had gone off, in the quarry, there would be no photo, get my drift.

So this huge bomb was due to go off on 1st August. Had it exploded, there would have been carnage.

The police are owed no thanks at all for finally discovering a bomb which had been in their own car park for more than 4 months.

Is it OK to ignore a vehicle because you think it belongs to some unknown neighbour?

This incident raises a large number of serious questions:

- Is Phuket now a potential target for Deep South militants?

- How did the bomb get onto the island when the Sarasin Bridge checkpoint is meant to secure the island's safety?

- Why was the car park not checked on a daily basis - it is a police station after all.

- CCTV pictures of the driver parking the car? No, I thought not!

This is a very serious incident, and we are all extremely lucky that this bomb did not detonate.

Time to set up a committee to investigate.....

Bye-bye, Ed. Have you got your bags packed yet? Have a nice holiday in the lock-up.

Had the pleasure of working and living 2 years in Madrid...The police there were very very fast at having cars moved that were suspiciously parked or just left too long ...and that for a very good reason.

Since the typical way of turing gas cylinders into deadly bombs is to fill them with explosives and metal pieces then a 16 kg LPG gas cylinders can easily weigh 100kg or a lot more when "ready" ...will be interesting to see what kind of explosive they were intending to use.

Oh, I have a 100 liter tank in the kitchen? Cause that the size of the 2 tanks on the picture of another source.
Ed, 100 liter gas tank, 2 of them, laying in the area behind the seats. Covered and unseen in a parking lot (of the police LOL) You ever checked, how big ~100 liter gas tanks are, before publishing, eh, such 'detail'?

To learn how to express your opinion logically, Rofl, you could take the example of Sailor. Reading what he wrote before you rushed to type could have improved your understanding. Here's what Sailor wrote:

Is it too much trouble for you to read and think before you type, Rofl? Here's hoping you are coming to understand the difference between logical opinions and ill-informed mouthings.

Ed, I understand how that works. Probably better, as others, commenting here.
On the other site it's mentioned, that the gas got filled up with explosive material to about 90kg/each.
But PW is still writing '2 100kg gas tanks'.
A 100kg gas tank is not the same, like a 16kg gas tank filled with explosive material to a weight of ~100kg.
But probably this is an unwanted opinion, right?
Have a nice x-mas, Mr. ED.

Goodness, are you trying to discuss something rather than just put down the accurate reporting on this site? What a pleasant change.
