Sharing ideas about what would work best would lead to the evolution of the Phuket model, former Prime Minister and opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said.
He was speaking to about 200 people in the audience at the Simon Star Show theatre in Phuket City.
Among the speakers, the former president of the Phuket Real Estate Association, Tanan Tanyapaiboon, warned of a potential oversupply of condos with a grim future for Phuket if that happened.
''Oversupply, with too many people investing rather than living here, could lead to housing estates built for hundreds but with just a few people living on them,'' he said.
The president of the Patong Hotels Association, Dr Sirichai Amornpairoj, said that Phuket's biggest infrastructure need remained a public transport system.
It would come at high cost but repay the investment by the government over time, he said.
Phuket still needed to make progress on developing second and third language skills, the meeting heard.
Although Phuket was well ahead of the rest of Thailand when it came to languages, language skills were still not good enough.
The Phuket Tourist Association - president Somboon Jirayus was among the gathering yesterday - plans its third ''Creative Phuket'' conference at Rajabhat University in Phuket City on July 20.
With the aim of sustainable development and preparing for the 2015 Asean economic community, keynote speakers will include former governor of Bangkok Apirak Kosayodhin and the CEO of Thai AirAsia, Tossapon Bijleveld.
Bookings are required with the cost set at 300 baht for PTA members and 400 baht for non-members.
Bookings can be made by calling 076 610365-6 or e: ptainfo@phuket.ksc.co.th
If Phuket is the blueprint for the rest of Thailand, God help us. Crumbling infrastructure, illegal immigrants working on every corner, Russian prostitutes plying their trade openly, no after hours public transport, dangerous and illegal buildings built on questionable land, rubbish dumped anywhere, corrupt officials and Police. More like a blackprint than a blueprint I'd say.
