Paddy O'Mahoney, 57, died after crashing his large Kawasaki about 7.30am on a bend near the left-hand turnoff to a group of Mai Khao resorts that include the JW Marriott, police said.
Mr O'Mahoney's motorcycle was the only vehicle involved. He celebrated his birthday on Sunday.
It is believed Mr O'Mahoney was on a road-trip away from Phuket when his motorcycle failed to take the bend.
The former resident of County Cork had been on Phuket for about seven years, giving his name to Paddy's Inn, a block of serviced apartments off Nanai Road in Patong.
Mr O'Mahoney, who was wearing a helmet, died after being taken by ambulance to Thalang Hospital.
A physical examination is expected to reveal whether he suffered a heart attack.
