Wanted friend Pramoch Jeracheeppatana didn't like the noise

Phuket Bar Buddies Blunder in Bust-Up: One Dead, the Other Wanted

Thursday, April 5, 2012
PHUKET: When friends who worked together in a bar in Phuket's famous Soi Bangla Road argued, their fight had disastrous consequences.

One killed the other - and investigating police discovered a hidden hoard of marijuana that was probably destined for sale to tourists.

After the friends finished working in the Soi Bangla bar early on Wednesday morning, they headed back to their accommodation in neighboring units in Prabaramee Road, near the intersection with Soi Dog and Duck.

Teerayut Kongthu, 28, began having an early-morning squabble with his wife, Sirinan Arnu, 22. His workmate Pramoch Jeracheeppatana, 37, didn't like the loud abuse being heaped by Khun Teerayut and objected.

With that, police were told later, Teerayut pulled out a long Sparta knife and told his friend to back off. Khun Pramoch wasn't one to give up.

He reappeared on the scene armed with a homemade thai pradit gun and shot Khun Teerayut. He died before reaching Patong Hospital.

In a motorcycle at the premises, police found a haul of marijuana that belonged to Khun Teerayut. They are still hunting for Khun Pramoch.

What Thailand need is a rewrite of the domestic violence law.

As of now, police show little or no interest in domestic disputes and neither do neighbors. Many Thai men view it as their right to abuse their spouse at will and anyone daring to question that right will face consequences.

Along the years I've read several similar reports and as things stand, I expect to read many more in the future.

When asking Thai women why they prefer western men to Thais, many bring up the subject of domestic violence. Same goes for Filipinas.

In several US states in cases of domestic violence it is mandatory for the police to make an arrest. That policy sure gets my vote.

Thailand doesn't need anything you said,
Steve C.! I aprreciated your suggestions, but they will be useful for a developped country, not for a developping country as similar as the Old Far West!

My biggest condolences goes out to his family and his girlfriend. We all lost a small man with a giant heart. Sad to lose you over such petty things! :(

What exactly is considered to be a "haul" of marijuana? To me this choice of words seems to suggest a large amount, for example, I wouldn't say that a joint, a gram, or an ounce of marijuana is much of a haul. I would think that unless it was at least a Kilo, then it would be a poor choice of words.

Editor Comment:

Most readers will have looked at the photograph and judged for themselves. The word ''haul'' was used because the police were not specific about the amount of marijuana. To an ant, a haul could be a grain. If you wish to argue about choice of words, Jesse, as we've said often recently:
