Tesco Lotus intersection in Phuket City disappears under water today

UPDATE Phuket Ban on Small Boats as Deluge Hammers Holiday Island

Friday, August 7, 2015
UPDATING All Day, Every Day

HEAVY rain and waves of up to four metres is the latest forecast for Phuket, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun with Phuket inundated by an average 103mm fall between 7pm Thursday and 7am Friday. The outlook: serious flooding expected.

Original Report
PHUKET: An overnight deluge on Phuket with strong wind gusts and more rain forecast led to a ban on boats under 10 metres putting to sea today.

The ban was applied by Phuket Marine Office 5 director, Phuripat Theerakulpisut, in the face of serious bad weather and forecast waves of two to four metres.

Gusts of up to 45kph could make conditions difficult even for vessels larger than 10 metres.

Boats of less than 10 metres were prohibited from making trips to Phi Phi or Racha island, two popular destinations even on a wet, grey Phuket day.

Meanwhile on once-dry land, motorists faced congestion and flooded roads as the holiday island's low-lying spots disappeared beneath water yet again.

The bad weather is predicted to last for several days yet.

Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officials are becoming increasingly concerned about landslips as earth becomes saturated.

Phuket's local councils remain on 24-hour standby for emergencies.

I'm somewhat amazed there hasn't been a major building collapse in places like Soi Nanai in Patong. Some of the places built there seem to just hang on the side of the hill. When I was in Patong many old hands who were engineers and builders working the middle east would always explain how structures were accidents waiting to happen but so far they have been lucky.

Chalong circle is once again under about 70cm of water and rising, as is ChaoFa West around Home Pro. This at 2pm today

Unless you have a 4x4 with high clearance, I recommend you stay away from that area.

I tried to get to Chalong Pier, not a chance in my sedan.

@ Herbert, Wonder how they go to manage the water flooding there during underpass construction at place.

I'm sure they will all throw their arms up in the air in total surprise.

" How could we have know it would flood ! It's not our fault ! "

Building a tunnel instead of a flyover is pure lunacy and the only viable explanation is corruption. Since a tunnel is much more expensive, far more money can be siphoned off the project.

I don't know where you get your information from, Herbert, but i suggest you stick with reliable sources. The island's tourism authorities opted for underpasses to preserve the impression that Phuket was not just another Bangkok-style city. There is nothing about it that is ''pure lunacy,'' and no evidence so far that the underpasses are a problem.

@ Ed

Building a tunnel at a spot well known for flooding is lunacy in my books.

As for reliable sources, I tend to trust what I see with my own eyes but if you don't think that's credible, just look at your own title picture for this report and ask yourself is that a good location to build a tunnel at.

The only finished tunnel is NOT at a flood prone location so naturally there's no "evidence" yet either. Plenty of common sense would be available though for those who wish to apply it.

To dismiss the notion of an underpass that works without knowing what engineering expertise has gone into planning and construction seems to me to a dark, narrow, too-low approach to thinking, Herbert. Let in the light, please.

When car number plates are being washed off causing temporary halts to the regular flow of unwanted water, the chicken landing strip is unusable whether underground or aerial.
