The suspect was carrying a gun when nabbed by police, but he denied snatching the bag. The theft came about 11pm on Wednesday as Threerewat Phomspa, 23, and her Italian boyfriend passed Simon Cabaret in south Patong.
The motorcycle wobbled as the theft took place, but did not fall. The snatcher was wearing a full-face helmet but Khun Threerewat was able to note the numberplate.
Police traced the owner of the motorcycle, who said she had loaned the vehicle to a woman friend.
The woman friend said she had loaned the vehicle to another woman friend . . . and that friend led police to her boyfriend, Manok Rakhab, 21.
When arrested last night about 7pm near Patong Mosque, Khun Manok was carrying a single-shot homemade handgun, capable of firing a single bullet, and he also had three shells.
At his room, police found Khun Threerewat's white bag, an iPhone and 2500 baht, but her iPod was missing.
Khun Manok denied the snatch theft but admitted possession of the handgun. Police have impounded the borrowed motorcycle as evidence.
Khun Threerewat's boyfriend was anxious not to be photographed.

Phuket Resort Maids Profiled in BBC Doco: Review
He was anxious not to be photographed? I thought the whole point of the parade when Police catch someone is to proudly show off how good they are and to shame the person by making it front page news. So this thief didn't want his photo taken and thus we respect his wishes?
Although I am extremely pleased a thief with a gun is off the street... or is he on bail?
Very Confused.
