Phuket passengers arrive to be greeted by taxi and mini-van drivers

Phuket Air Traffic Takes Off to Tourism Record

Wednesday, November 16, 2011
PHUKET: The Phuket International Airport continues to absorb record numbers of air travellers, with passenger figures for October up 16.07 percent on last year.

A total of 690,664 arrivals and departures were recorded on Phuket during the month, taking the total for 2011 so far to 6,963,332 - and with two busy months to come, the eight-million figure is bound to be surpassed.

More than seven million comings and goings were recorded in 2010. Hard-working airport staff have managed to take the airport beyond its 6.5 million capacity, and go higher.

With the enlargement of the airport now underway and aiming for a capacity of 12.5 million by November 2014, it's entirely possible that Phuket could be nudging that figure before then.

In October, international passengers continued to surge, rising by 29.74 percent compared to 4.68 for domestic travel.

For the year to November 1, total arrivals and departures are up by 22.05 percent, with international arrivals and departures up by 32.85 percent.

Air cargo to Phuket in October dipped by 6.14 percent to 2120 tonnes in the knock-on from the Bangkok floods.

I wonder what percentage of these arrivals now turn left out of the airport and away from the island. Year after year I've seen less and less tourists sitting by the pools of large resorts in peak season. If arrivals are increasing as stated, they must be going else where - or staying in cheaper accommodation.
