koreaherald.com Phuket could host the 2014 Asian Beach Games because the Philippines' Boracay, the original host city, has shown less than favorable interest, said Thai Tourism and Sport Minister Chumpol Silapa-Archa. The Olympic Council of Asia will announce the winning bid on November 13, during the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. ''Phuket is perfect for this,'' he said. ''It is one of the most famous beaches.''

bangkokpost.com Flight delays have left more than 2000 haj pilgrims stranded at Hat Yai International Airport. Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat said the Civil Aviation Department had allowed Iran Air and Mahan Air to fly Thai pilgrims to Mecca in breach of a Cabinet resolution that authorises Thai Airways International to select airlines to carry pilgrims, the minister said.

Phuketwan Update Phuket police are looking for a motorcylist who knocked down a five-year-old boy and fled on Wednesday. The incident, in the main shopping precinct near the bridge to Koh Sireh, left locals and paramedics to care for the boy, who suffered a broken leg. Police believe the man may have fled out of fear of a mob reaction. (See the photo album above.)

Phuketwan Update A record 100 teams from more than 30 countries including China, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Venezuela, Switzerland and France have entered the Phuket Thailand Open beach volleyball from November 2-7. The series will be telecast globally.

Another victim, also from Laos, was believed to have been tortured to death, police said.
