SOMEONE had beaten him to it. When Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-nob arrived at the tip of Cape Promthep today, a photographer was already there, taking shots of a model in a flowing dress.
But the Governor will not be upstaged on October 29, when 1000 singers will gather on the cape to give Phuket 10 of its 15 minutes of fame.
It's all being figured out with great precision. Today Governor Wichai and his party, all dressed in Vegetarian Festival white, clambered down to the cape to check the ''auditorium'' first-hand.
Some of the palmyra that the the governor likes so much have had their tops lopped in a battle with bugs.
Regardless, the scene should look magnificent when cameras pan up from the 1000 lusty singers, arrayed in red, white and blue lines in a live Thai flag, out over the blue Andaman Sea.
There, bobbing in the crystal clear water, will be a handful of magnificent yachts and a navy vessel.
Weather permitting, Phuket should look its perfect best for the nationally telecast NBT performance from 5.50pm.
Phuket will be the 40th of the 76 provinces to have its turn singing in the sunshine. The series began on September 20 with Krabi in pole position and ends with Ubon Ratchathani on December 4.
The following day, the national unity campaign will end with a large ceremony in Bangkok to mark HM the King's birthday.
The occasion is special everywhere around the country but it has long been marked in the waters off Phuket by the King's Cup Regatta.
Prayers were sent up for HM The King by about 2000 people at Saphan Hin last night.
On the day that Phuket lifts its voices, thousands of onlookers are also expected to attend. Space is being created for parking so that the one-way system can make it easy for access.
A shuttle service will carry visitors up to the Cape lookout.
The fine details are now being worked out. For example, it has been calculated that 17 singers can form in a row across the pathwide, so they will be color-coordinated accordingly, place by place.
Visitors are advised to be at the cape by 4pm. Here it comes: Phuket, the anthem.
