Olivier Jannequin, killed by a fast-moving speedboat while snorkelling

Phi Phi Expat Killed by Speedboat on Day Trip Outing

Sunday, August 19, 2012
UPDATE

POLICE have named the dead man as Olivier Raymond Philippe Jannequin, 42. Officers say he was struck on the head and shoulders while snorkelling by a speedboat that kept going.

Original Report

PHUKET: A Frenchman on a snorkelling outing off the popular holiday island of Phi Phi was hit and killed by a speedboat yesterday, police confirmed today.

The dead man was an expat resident on Phi Phi, which lies about 80 minutes by ferry from Phuket, local authorities said. The tragedy occurred about lunchtime.

Phi Phi officials tried to send the body to the mainland of Krabi province by boat yesterday but were halted by high waves, a spokesman for the Chao Fa Krabi Rescue Centre said.

Another attempt to transfer the body to Krabi Hospital in Krabi Town will be made today, added the centre's director, Nitipat Mongkhonprasit.

Police say that they have yet to learn details of the tragedy.

Officers hope to interview companions who were with the dead man later today, said Lieutenant Wisawa Senghar.

In June, Canadian-French sisters Audrey and Noemi Belanger were found dead in their Phi Phi resort room from an as-yet unexplained toxic reaction. Results of double autopsies in Thailand and Canada have not been revealed.

One Frenchman was seriously burned in Friday morning's Tiger Bar disco inferno on Phuket and another is believed to have been among the four as-yet unidentified dead.

Two Frenchmen are also among the eight drownings at Phuket's west coast beaches since mid-May.

When a Russian swimmer was struck on the leg and seriously injured by a speedboat at a Phuket beach last year, the official responsible for controlling speedboats and jet-skis off Phuket described it as ''natural.''

As the article says, details are not yet available. Please be patient. The man's family will need to be notified first.

Any word on what if anything has happened to the speedboat captain? Just another "natural" occurrence?
It is standard operating procedure here for speed boats to drive at speed around snorkeling and diving areas. I see it all the time from dive boats. Safety's Third! (After money and face)

We publish what we can, when we can. No point in expecting more than we can possibly deliver.

Safety First - not a concept widely understood. This will simply be put down to an accident and most likely no charges will be bought against the operator of the speedboat. Obviously, as in the case of the Russian, negligence simply doesn't factor in.

Most speed boats are driven by their "drivers" exactly as they drive their motorbikes which is fast and with no regard for anybody, anything, rules and with a serious lack of common sense.

Ed., one more! Everyday Andaman sea and islands want a penality@ a life of expat!
Ed, say again, " it's accidentally occurred! " What about Thai operator negligence and professional incompetence, instead?

You always parrot the obvious, Coralie. Why not wait until a thought enters your head? Wiser readers will wait to learn more about the circumstances.

RIP Khun Oliver. Inaction of people who are responsible for safe procedures around swimmers ended your life.

A tourist from Ekaterinburg, Sverdlovskaya Oblast, next to Kazakhstan? Who is so crazy? The upside of doing "nothing"? [moderated by myself]" Dec. 12, 2011.

Ed.,I don't need to learn more about Phuket and Thailand safety: the only real and safe fact on Phuket and in Thailand, it's the umbelieveble way that tourists and residents are UNSAFE, in any sector!

Editor Comment:

What you're spreading is a big lie, Coralie. Most tourists and residents are perfectly safe. Only a very small percentage come to grief. To exaggerate the issues out of all proportion is mischievous and unfair. Yes, there are concerns that need to be addressed. But your ridiculous screaming offers no solutions, only unnecessary noise.

......there in lies the safety standard on Phuket.....

The victim was not a resident of Phi Phi, but a tourist, which does not make the brutal death less shocking...At the moment it does not look like the police is trying too hard to find the speed boat..
