Federation drivers in uniform at a Patong meeting last year

Patong Tuk-Tuk Protesters 'a Small Rogue Group'

Saturday, January 29, 2011
TUK-TUK drivers who staged a protest about Patong's one-way system yesterday were part of a small group who were behaving selfishly, says the President of the Patong Taxi Federation, Preechavude ''Prab'' Keesin.

''They are just a handful,'' Khun Prab said. ''This is old-style Patong. Over the years, the rest of us have changed to make Patong more international.''

Khun Prab said the 30 drivers who protested yesterday at Kathu Police Station, which oversees Patong, remained outside the tuk-tuk federation, which now has 600 tuk-tuk drivers and 1000 taxi drivers as members.

''We have trained drivers who wear uniforms, and we walk together with the Governor and other leaders and authorities on Phuket,'' he said.

The small group of rogue protest drivers, he said, were based on Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, close to the Jungceylon shopping mall.

Talks on Monday at Patong Municipality will be aimed at resolving the conflict. The protest drivers want the clockwise one-way system around the beach road and Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road reversed to run anti-clockwise.

They argue that in correcting the problems that occurred by motorists having to travel on the wrong side of the road when traversing two-way connecting sois, the new system causes extra unnecessary travelling time.

The drivers say that both problems would be resolved by reversing the direction of the main loop, which would allow for two-way traffic to be restored to the connecting laneway sois, with motorists travelling on the correct side of the road.

The one-way system was introduced in 2007 and alterations to make the connecting sois one-way were introduced on January 15, to mixed reviews.

Khun Prab said the changes were the result of a consensus by all authorities after negotiations.

''We have tried to invite these drivers many times to meetings, but they always choose not to come,'' he said.

While Khun Prab at one stage told Phuketwan that he would like to see the one-way system reversed, he has been content to compromise in a reaching a consensus with others involved in the decision, including Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha.

''This is a very small group expressing dissent,'' he said. ''There have been no complaints, for example, from the tuk-tuk drivers in Kalim [the village north of Patong], who have to deal with extra-long trips.

''The protest group has never behaved as part of the Patong community. They suit themselves.''

Public protests of the kind staged by the drivers yesterday have been discourage over the past couple of years, with the present Governor and his predecessor encouraging dissenters and those with grievances to send delegations to lodge any protest directly with the authorities at Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

Monday's meeting is expected to consider what the rogue tuk-tuk drivers have to say. The drivers have prepared a map of their proposal and its adoption appears to considerably shorten many trips.

It has a been a busy time for tuk-tuks. On Thursday, provisional agreement was reached on a range of maximum fares for tuk-tuks in and around Patong that did not placate critics who argue the fares remain excessively high.

On the other side of Phuket in Phuket City, a ''pinkie bus'' service criss-crosses the capital, offering low-fare trips for adults and free trips for schoolchildren.

So how many drivers were actually at this demo? According to "the other news agency" there were almost 100 drivers. Phuketwan said yesterday that there were 50. Now Khun Prab says there were 30. Who's exaggerating? There's a big difference between 100 and 30.

Also, I notice you report that the Patong Taxi Federation now has 1000 registered taxi drivers and only 600 tuk-tuk drivers. I wonder how this is possible since I see no registered (green plated) taxis, so they're all breaking the law. I know K. Prab has said he wants to do something about this but when? Mean time when they want to police's help with the one-way system . . . the law is flexible.

One more point. Take a look at their little hand drawn map. It shows the traffic directions when you reverse the flow around Patong. Look at what happens to the traffic at either end of Ratuthit and tell me how this helps. Consider also that most of the traffic that now runs on Ratuthit will not be shifted to the beach road, but instead will tend to use third road behind Jungceylon, which is already chaos, and will then cause problems at the Simon Cabaret intersection at the southern end.

I honestly can't see how reversing the one-way system in this way is going to help anyone.

And the story goes on and where is the law and order.

One another point i drove past a school today and all the under age kids were leaving on there motor bikes without licences and no helmets. A great way to teach kids how to behave for their future lives.

Maximum fares? What civil country uses this, in addition to the "maximum fares" being the highest in the world? I tell all my friends visiting never to use a tuk tuk, basically it is legalised extortion. The fares are beyond belief!

So, lets say it has been only 30 drivers! this makes sense as it has been mentioned that Baht 30,000.- needs to be paid to the police e.g. Baht 1,000.- per tuk-tuk!

According to the police the new one way system is a success. If anyone comes from southern Patong and wants to go to Karon or for example the OTOP market, they will have to drive to Had Patong road and return through the whole of Patong to go in southern direction. (this after 6 pm when Bangla closes) This creates a heavy additional traffic flow to the already congested roads in Patong..

Irrespective of whether someone wishes to label them rogues, this group of tuk-tuk drivers are absolutely correct this time.

The modifications since 15th January are an absolute fiasco and complete madness.

The issue of high fares and their lack of allegiance to another group controlled by another person is irrelevant to the matter of the one way system, and only muddies the waters.

I hope that somebody somewhere rectifies this stupid one way system as soon as possible.

A point being made that keeps getting missed - just bring in the pink bus system to the west coast.

Surin, Kalim, Patong, Karon, Kata, Laem Promthep, Chalong and back.

Whoever thought up the idea of the Pink Buses was ingenious. Bring them in and let's see what people will choose.

Little do I care what a Tuk-Tuk charges, with the official consent of the Governor, if I can ride a bus for Bt 10.
