Naser Amin Mohammad Mansour under arrest last night

Patong Restaurant Dispute Leads to Owner's Arrest

Monday, December 19, 2011
PHUKET: Police in Patong are holding a prominent restaurateur after a disturbance at the man's diner last night over an alleged seven-million baht debt.

Six security guards rushed to the aid of their employer when Patong police put the man in handcuffs at 7.20pm.

The security guards also told a media photographer with the police to destroy all the shots of the incident.

Arrested in the row was Naser Amin Mohammad Mansour, 45, a business partner in the Orient restaurant, near the Jungceylon shopping centre in Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road.

Police went to the restaurant acting on a warrant from the Phuket Provincial Court issued on December 14.

Mr Mansour is being held at Phuket Provincial Prison in Phuket City.

The warrant is in relation to an alleged seven-million baht debt incurred in a partnership in a bangkok restaurant, said Lieutenant Thammasan Boonsong.

Last night's incident was resolved without violence.

Is it common practice in Thailand for the Police to get involved in Debt Collection?

A business debt is a Civil matter not a Criminal one. What are the police doing getting involved. His business partner should have issued a Civil Writ against him.

You couldn't make the BS up. Seriously, with all the problems on Phuket and this is what it comes to... debt collecting. Beggars belief.

Based on the scant information in the article, everyone is too quick to find fault ...either for police doing nothing, or in this case for doing something.
It is quite possible that there already was a court judgement against the man ordering him to pay back the amount. If he was in defiance of a court order it would then become a criminal case.

I can't believe it was resolved without violence. That must be a first for Patong. There are hundreds of people in Patong who would kill you over a debt of a few thousand baht.

I guess the media photographer with all the (photo) shots took the direction of the seven security guards seriously?
