Governor Dr Preecha Ruangjan during a recent Patong fire safety check

Patong Pubs Closed On Time in Crackdown

Tuesday, February 3, 2009
Wednesday: All pubs were shut by 2.30am today, police say

POLICE in Patong closed all pubs, clubs, restaurants and karaoke bars early today in a sweep to ensure all venues were shut before 2am, the official closing time.

However, there were so many venues still open well after 2am that the small number of officers were still working at 5am this morning.

A police spokesman told Phuketwan: ''It will mean less work for us because there will not be so much drunkenness and crime.

''Mishaps involving people who have had too much to drink should also be reduced.''

The crackdown follows the deadly New Year's Eve blaze at the Santika pub in Bangkok, which claimed more than 60 lives.
