Katoey roundup: a police pickup carts off Patong's unwanted loiterers

Patong Police Pounce: Katoeys in Mass Arrest

Monday, September 6, 2010
PATONG police are warning tourists to beware of ladyboy katoeys. Eleven were arrested last night for minor offences, including loitering.

Lieutenant Nikorn Chootong of Kathu Police Station said the scale of the fines for katoeys accused of nuisance crimes - usually 500 baht - had been reduced to 100 baht now because of ''the economic downturn.''

''If they are arrested often enough, they will stop,'' Lieutenant Nikorn said. Tourists needed to guard their valuables because many of the katoeys are from other parts of Thailand and less honest than locals, he added.

Out-of-towners usually arrive on Phuket in increasing numbers when they hear about cruise ships or US warships arriving.

Fines reduced due to the economic downturn??? Only in Thailand!! Interesting that the katoeys get done for loitering when hundreds of ladies can be seen standing around Bangla just minding their own business and taking in the air every night.

Does that go for farangs hit by the downturn as well? I have never experienced I would get any fines reduced.

An accurate comparison would require you to put on a dress, hang about outside the bars in Soi Bangla, and see what happened. Hey, you might not even get arrested.

"..because many of the katoeys are from other parts of Thailand and less honest than locals, he added."

Phuket locals aren't any better than anyone else.
