A helmet, a motorcycle, a mystery: what happened on Patong Hill?

Patong Hill Motorcycle Mashing: Photo Album

Sunday, July 12, 2009
COMPARED with most motorcycle mishaps on Phuket, it was a small incident, with an added touch of mystery.

It happened at the top of the first crest on Patong Hill, providing the most scenic view of the winding road towards Phuket City, late on Saturday morning.

We came upon the scene after the rider had gone. But where?

Precisely what happened remains a riddle. We found a helmet on the road, the visor some distance away.

It was a cheap helmet. Was it on the rider's head at the time the motorcycle toppled? We don't know for sure.

While we looked on, an ambulance arrived, presumably to collect the rider, who had vanished. They picked up the pieces, literally.

The two paramedics and the policeman who was already there cleared the roadway of the broken bits, and the bike.

About 15 people die on motorcycles on Phuket each month. More than 1000 people each month are injured, some seriously, some with permanent disabilities.

We hope the person involved in this incident was not badly hurt, but we don't know for sure.

Perhaps the Photo Album from the scene will cause one or two motorcyclists and drivers to slow down a little, to buy a better quality helmet, and to make sure it stays on.
